Arrival day

Before Day 1. Istanbul is big and hilly, so settle near the old center and let the first evening be a slow one.Details
From the airport
Istanbul has two main airports, one on each side of the Bosphorus, and both are a long way from the old city. Allow generous time for a taxi, a shuttle bus or a metro and tram connection, and more at rush hour.
Where to stay
Most of the first days are in Sultanahmet, so a base near the tram line there saves tired legs. Galata and Beyoglu are lively and handy for the later days, but the streets between them and the old city are steep.
Getting around
A tram runs through the old city and across the Golden Horn. Ferries cross to the Asian side and up the strait, and they are part of the trip, not just a ride. Expect hills and cobbles, and wear good shoes.
Check ahead
Some of the great mosques and museums change how and when they are open, and religious holidays move each year. Before each day, check whether the building you want is open to visitors and in what way. Day 1 begins in Sultanahmet with Hagia Sophia, so a quiet first evening is enough.

Day 1. Sultanahmet

4 stops · 1.6 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Hagia Sophia

The great domed church of the old Byzantine city, later a mosque, with a huge central space lit from the windows high above. How and when visitors can enter has changed over the years, so check ahead.

Go when Early morning, before the tour groups arrive.

Local tip Stand in the middle of the floor and turn slowly. Check ahead for how visitors enter, and cover your shoulders and knees.

    MorningPick your courtyards

    Topkapi Palace

The home of the Ottoman sultans for centuries, a set of courtyards, pavilions and terraces above the water. Pick the courtyards and the views first, and go room by room only as far as you like.

Go when Morning, as soon as you can get in.

Local tip Do not try to see every room. Take the courtyards, the terrace view of the strait and one or two pavilions, and rest on a bench.

  3. Lunch

    Kofte and bean salad

Grilled meatballs with a cool salad of white beans and onion, a classic plain lunch in the old city. It is quick and filling.

Local tip Look for a small place near the Hippodrome where the grill is in the window.

    Blue Mosque

A mosque with six minarets and a cascade of domes, named for the blue tiles inside. It is a working place of worship, so cover your shoulders and knees, take your shoes off and expect visits to pause at prayer times.

Go when Morning, outside the prayer times.

Local tip Cover your shoulders and knees, take your shoes off at the door and expect visits to pause for prayer, and on Friday around midday.

    AfternoonWorth a short visit

    Basilica Cistern

A vast underground water hall from the Byzantine city, with rows of columns rising from shallow water. Cool and dim, it is a good break from the heat or the rain. Check ahead, since the cistern has closed for work before.

Go when Mid-afternoon, or in the rain.

Local tip It is cool and damp underground, so bring a light layer in summer. Check ahead, since the cistern has had closures for work.

  6. Dinner

    Meze and a grill

Small plates of eggplant, yogurt, stuffed vine leaves and fresh bread, then a simple grill. A relaxed first-night dinner.

Local tip Walk a few streets from the main sights for a calmer table.

If it rains. Everything today is indoors, so rain does not change the plan.

Day 2. The bazaars and Suleymaniye and Karakoy, Galata and Beyoglu

4 stops · 4.7 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

    Grand Bazaar

A huge covered market of lanes, courtyards and little shops, one of the largest and oldest covered markets anywhere. Get lost on purpose for an hour and use the gates to find your way out.

Go when Morning, when the lanes are still calm.

Local tip Note the gate you came in by. Looking is free and bargaining is expected, so there is no need to hurry or to buy.

    MiddayA climb for the view

    Galata Tower

A round medieval stone tower on the hill, with a ring-shaped view over the Golden Horn and the old city. Check ahead for how you can go up.

Go when Late morning, or near sunset (about 7:43 PM) for the best light.

Local tip Check ahead for how you can go up. The view from the street below is also good, and costs nothing.

  3. Lunch

    Stuffed mussels

Mussels filled with spiced rice, eaten from a street stall with a squeeze of lemon. A popular snack in Beyoglu and Karakoy.

Local tip Eat a few at a time. The vendor will keep count, and you can stop when you like.

The great mosque on the third hill, built for a sultan by the famous architect Sinan. The courtyard and the terrace behind it look out over the Golden Horn.

Go when Late morning, outside the prayer times.

Local tip Cover your shoulders and knees and take your shoes off. The terrace on the far side looks out over the Golden Horn.

    Istanbul Archaeology Museums

Three museums in a group of old buildings below the palace, with sarcophagi, ancient statues and objects from across the old empires. A cool, quiet place for the hot hours.

Go when Midday, when the heat or the rain is at its worst.

Local tip The sarcophagi in the main building are the best known. Take your time with a few and skip the rest.

  6. Dinner

    Lamb on smoky eggplant

A dish of tender lamb stew over a puree of smoked eggplant, a dish with Ottoman roots that is still on many menus.

Local tip Order it with plain rice and a bowl of yogurt.

If it rains. Grand Bazaar, Suleymaniye Mosque and Istanbul Archaeology Museums are covered, so keep them. Move Galata Tower to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The airports are far from the center, so plan the way out the night before.Details
Airport time
Allow a long window for the road to either airport, because traffic across the city is slow at the start and end of the working day. A morning flight may be easier from a hotel near the tram line.
Last day on the water
If you have a few free hours, a short ferry across to the Asian side and back is a calm way to say goodbye, with the skyline of domes and minarets in front of you.
Last shopping
Ask a shop to pack anything fragile, such as ceramics, and check the rules for carrying food and spices through your home airport before you buy.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to visit Istanbul?

By average weather from 2021 to 2025, April to June and September to November are the most comfortable months for walking around Istanbul. This plan is built for late April, which is one of the best months. Crowds and prices change through the year, so check them before you book.

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 2 days in Istanbul, planned for late April. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?

It was planned for most travelers. The pace and the places reflect that, so check it fits how you travel.

Is anything on this plan booked?

No. Places marked "book ahead" need a reservation. Hours, prices and availability change, so confirm before you go.

Yes. Archie drafts a day by day plan for your dates and takes your pace, the weather and who is travelling into account. You can start one from the Archie app.

Can I change this plan?

Yes. It is a starting point you can change to fit your own trip: swap a place, add a day or move the pace.

How much walking is there?
