Arrival day

Before Day 1. The island is small, so you can be in the old town within the hour of landing.Details
By air
The airport is a short drive from Mykonos Town. Taxis and hotel transfers meet the flights, and there is a local bus. In the busy months, book the transfer ahead.
By ferry
Ferries run from Piraeus and Rafina on the mainland, and from other islands. Schedules change with the season and the weather, so check ahead and keep a spare day if the wind is strong.
Where to stay
In the town, you can walk everywhere. On the coast, you need a bus, a taxi or a rental. Early June is warm and before the peak, while August is busy and costly in general, so book ahead for that month.
Tonight
Drop your bags, take a slow walk through the lanes and toast the arrival. Keep it light, since Day 1 starts in the old town and the Delos boat leaves early on Day 2.

Day 1. Mykonos Town, the lanes and the sunset toast

4 stops · 0.9 km

A day on foot in the white maze of the old town: the sea-front church, the harbor, the windmills on the ridge and the sunset at the water’s edge. Wander slowly. Getting lost is part of it.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth a short stop

    Paraportiani Church

A cluster of small white chapels fused into one lumpy, gleaming whole at the edge of the sea. It is one of the best-known buildings in the Cyclades, and the early light is soft and quiet.

Go when Early morning, when the white walls are quiet and the light is soft.

Local tip The best view is from the lane beside the water. Walk around it, since the shape looks different from every side. It is a church, so keep your voice low.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Old Port of Mykonos

The little harbor at the foot of the town, with fishing boats, cafes and a promenade. The pelican that has long been the town’s mascot may wander by. A good spot for a Greek salad and a cold drink.

Go when Midday for a long lunch by the water, or at dusk when the lights come on.

Local tip Fishing boats still come in here, so a plate of grilled fish or a simple Greek salad near the harbor is a fair bet. Boats to Delos also leave from the old port, so check ahead where yours goes.

  3. Lunch

    Greek salad and grilled fish

A table by the harbor, a plate of tomatoes, cucumber, olives and feta, and fish from the grill. Light and fresh, so there is room for a long evening.

Local tip Ask what came in that morning, and take your time over the meal.

    Windmills of Mykonos

A row of old white windmills on the ridge above the sea, once used to grind grain. Walk up for the view back over the town and keep your camera ready for the late light.

Go when Late afternoon, when the light turns gold and the town glows below.

Local tip The path up is short but can be windy. Bring a layer and a firm hold on your hat, and walk on to Little Venice for the evening.

    EveningWorth the time

    Little Venice

A line of old sea captains’ houses with balconies hanging over the water. The place on the island to watch the sun go down with a glass in your hand. Come early to find a spot.

Go when Sunset (about 8:41 PM), with a glass in hand. Arrive well before, since the tables by the water fill early.

Local tip Waves can splash the lowest terraces when the sea is rough, so keep your bag off the floor. This is the place for the sunset toast, so make it the high point of the first evening.

  6. Treat

    A toast at sunset

A cold drink at the water’s edge as the sun goes down behind the sea. Make it the first toast of the trip, to whatever you came here to celebrate.

Local tip Arrive an hour early for a table, and order something small to keep the seat.

  7. Dinner

A long dinner in the lanes

Grilled octopus, kopanisti cheese on toast, tomatoes stuffed with rice and a bottle of local white wine. Dinner here starts late and lingers.

Local tip Book ahead in the busy months, and plan a late table so you can enjoy the sunset first.

If it rains. Rain is rare in early summer, but the lanes can be slippery after a shower. If it is wet, spend the day among the cafes of the old port and keep the sunset toast for a covered terrace.

Day 2. Delos, the sacred island

4 stops · 8.7 km

A boat from the old port to the island where Apollo was said to be born. Nobody lives on Delos, and the ruins cover the whole island. Go in the cool of the morning and be back in town for a late lunch.

  1. Travel from Little VeniceAbout 19 min by car or transit7.4 km
    Where Day 1 ended.
  2. Breakfast

A big breakfast before the boat

Yogurt with honey and fruit, fresh bread, eggs and strong coffee. There is no food on Delos, so eat well before you go.

Local tip Carry water and a snack for the boat and the site.

  3. 1
    MorningWorth the time, check ahead

    Delos

A small island with one of the great archaeological sites of Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Streets, temples, houses and a sacred lake lie in the open, with almost no shade. Check ahead for the boat days.

Go when The first boat of the day, before the sun is high and the site is hot.

Local tip There is almost no shade and no food on the island, so carry water and a hat. Check ahead for the boat days and the visiting rules, and wear shoes with a good grip on the old stone.

    MorningWorth a short stop

    Terrace of the Lions

A row of marble lions in a line facing the old sacred lake, carved around twenty-six hundred years ago. The ones standing today are copies, and the originals are kept in the museum on the island.

Go when Early, when the light on the marble is low and the paths are empty.

Local tip The lions you see are copies, kept here to protect the originals. Look for the shape of the old sacred lake beside them, which is now dry.

    MiddayWorth the time

    House of Dionysus

A grand private house of the ancient town, known for its floor mosaics, including a figure riding a panther. A good place to picture how people once lived here.

Go when Mid-morning, before the heat climbs.

Local tip The mosaics are the point, so look down. Read the signs, since the figures tell the stories, and give your eyes a minute to see the colors.

    About 5 min walk0.4 km
  6. 4
    AfternoonWorth a short stop

    Mount Kynthos

The low hill that rises above the ruins, reached by a short climb of rough steps. From the top, the whole island and the nearby Cyclades lie spread out below. Wear sturdy shoes.

Go when Before the boat back, if you have the energy and the day is not too hot.

Local tip The climb is a short flight of rough steps in the open, so go slowly and bring water. The view from the top is the reward. Skip it in strong wind or midday heat.

  7. Lunch

A late lunch back in town

After the ruins, a long shaded lunch of grilled fish, a Greek salad and a cold drink. You will have earned it.

Local tip Take a seat in the shade and drink plenty of water.

  8. Dinner

    Dinner in the old town

A relaxed meal of local dishes, such as louza, the cured pork of the island, fried zucchini and slow lamb. A quiet evening after the ruins.

Local tip Keep the evening simple, so you are fresh for the beaches tomorrow.

If it rains. Boats to Delos can be cancelled in rough weather or strong wind, so check ahead. If they do not run, spend the day in the Archaeological Museum and the lanes of the town, and try again the next morning.

Day 3. The south coast beaches

5 stops · 11.4 km

A beach day from west to east along the south coast. Some of the beaches are party beaches with music and some are quiet, so pick by mood. You need a bus, a taxi or a boat to move between them.

    Where Day 2 ended.
  2. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Psarou Beach

A sheltered sandy bay with calm water, popular for a long morning in the sun. It is one of the more glamorous stretches of the coast, and lively from late morning.

Go when Morning, when the sea is calm and the sand is cool.

Local tip It is one of the more glamorous beaches, with a lot of seats and a lively crowd. Sunbeds are common and run by the beach, so ask before you lay a towel.

    About 20 min walk1.6 km

    MiddayWorth the time

    Paradise Beach

A long beach of sand and shallow water, known for its music and a lively scene through the day. Come here when you want company, and walk to one end if you want a little space.

Go when Midday into the afternoon, when the music starts and the sea is warm.

Local tip This is a party beach, so expect a crowd and noise. Walk to the far end if you want a quieter patch, and check ahead on the wind, since the summer north wind can stir up the water.

  4. Lunch

A beach lunch with the sea in view

Grilled calamari, a Greek salad and cold drinks, eaten barefoot by the water. A simple lunch is part of a good beach day.

    Super Paradise Beach

The next bay along, a livelier party beach with a mix of ages and a lot of noise. Go for the energy, or skip it if you want peace.

Go when Afternoon, if you want the party, and skip it if you do not.

Local tip It is an energetic place with loud music, so decide before you go whether you want it. A taxi back is easy in the day and harder late, so plan the ride home.

    About 9 min walk0.7 km
  6. 4
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Agrari Beach

A quieter cove with a small crescent of sand and clear water, reached by a short walk from the road. A calmer place for a swim after the busy bays.

Go when Afternoon, for a calmer swim after the busy bays.

Local tip A small cove with a quieter feel. It can get windy on the open side, so check the sea first, and bring water and snacks since it is not a full resort.

    About 16 min walk1.3 km

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Elia Beach

The longest sandy beach on the island, on the southeast coast, with space to spread out. Calm and family-friendly on most days. It is a good place to end the beach day.

Go when Late afternoon, when there is more room and the light is soft.

Local tip It is a long beach, so walk along it for the quiet end. Water sports and loud music are in some parts and not in others. It is a good place to find space.

  8. Dinner

    A late dinner in Chora

Back in the town for a long, late table, with grilled meats, fresh fish and the island’s almond sweets to finish. The night out starts after.

Local tip Book a table, and plan a ride home before you go out.

  9. Treat

A night out in the town

Mykonos Town is known for its late nights, with bars and music through the lanes into the early hours. Go out with your group, pace yourselves and keep a sober head for the walk back.

Local tip Agree on a meeting spot, plan how to get back to your hotel, and drink water along the way.

If it rains. On a windy or cloudy day, skip the open beaches and choose a sheltered bay such as Psarou, or move this day inside to a long lunch and the museums. The strong north wind makes some beaches rough.

Day 4. The quiet north and Ano Mera

5 stops · 11.1 km

A slower day away from the town. The one inland village, a monastery, a long beach on the north coast, a lighthouse and a quiet sunset. The north is windy in the summer, so bring a layer.

  1. Travel from Elia BeachAbout 12 min by car or transit3.7 km

    Ano Mera

The only real inland village on the island, with a small square, shade trees and a laid-back pace. A good place for a late breakfast before the sun gets strong.

Go when Morning, for a slow breakfast under the trees.

Local tip Look for the local cheese kopanisti and the cured pork louza, two foods of the island. The village is the best place to see island life away from the beach.

  3. Lunch

A taverna lunch in Ano Mera

Village food: kopanisti, louza, a plate of grilled vegetables and meat from the grill. Simple and generous, in the shade of the village square.

Local tip Ask for the local cheese and the cured pork, and take it slowly.

    Panormos Beach

A wide sandy bay on the north coast, with a more natural feel than the south. The wind can be strong here, so check the sea before you go, and enjoy the open space.

Go when Midday, when the water is brightest and the beach is open.

Local tip The meltemi, the strong summer north wind, hits this coast, so check the conditions ahead. On a still day it is a lovely place to swim. On a windy one, pick another bay.

Go when Afternoon, for the open sea view and the empty shore.

Local tip It is a short stop on a bare headland, so bring a jacket for the wind. The road is rough in places, so go slowly or take a taxi.

    EveningWorth the time

    Agios Sostis Beach

A calm, quiet beach in the northwest, away from the crowd and with a long, open view to the west. A good place for a last glass of wine as the light goes.

Go when Sunset (about 8:41 PM), with a quiet glass on the sand.

Local tip A calm spot with few services, so bring water and a little food. Plan how you will get back before dark, since buses run less often in the evening. Check ahead.

  8. Dinner

A quiet dinner by the sea

After the sunset, a simple dinner of fish and local wine at a table near the shore. A softer evening after the night out.

Local tip Plan your way back before you sit down, since the north is quiet after dark.

If it rains. The north coast is the most exposed in a strong wind. If it is blowing, keep to Ano Mera and its monastery, and have a long lunch in the village instead of the beach.

Day 5. Museums, lanes and a last long lunch

3 stops · 4.0 km

A slow last day back in the town. A couple of small museums in the cool, a wander through the shopping lanes, then a long lunch to say goodbye. No alarm and no plan beyond lunch.

  2. Breakfast

    Coffee and an almond sweet

The island is known for its almond sweets, soft, sugary and dusted with sugar. Have a coffee and one with a slow start.

    MiddayA stroll and a stop

    Matoyianni Street

The main shopping lane of the town, winding past small boutiques, jewelry stalls and cafes. A good place for a souvenir and for a last stroll before lunch.

Go when Late morning, before the heat and the crowds, or after dinner for the evening buzz.

Local tip The lane twists and the shops are small, so look at the side streets as well. It is the kind of place to find a gift. Keep an eye on your bag in the crowd.

  6. Lunch

    A last long lunch

A final long table with everything you liked: fish, salad, cheese and a cold white wine. Raise a last glass to the trip.

Local tip Leave the afternoon empty, and do not rush the bill.

If it rains. A rainy last day suits the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum and a long lunch. Shopping in the lanes is easy even when the weather is grey.

Departure day

After Day 5. Work back from your flight or ferry and keep the last morning slow.Details
After the last night
If the night out ran late, pack before you go and leave the morning for coffee. Ask the hotel to keep your bags, so a late flight or ferry still leaves a few hours free.
To the airport or the port
Book a taxi or a transfer the evening before. The old port and the new port are not the same place, so check which one your ferry uses and leave a good margin.
Wind and weather
In the summer, the strong north wind can delay the ferries. If your onward trip is a boat, check ahead the day before and keep a little slack in your plans.
