3 days in Athens

Arrival day

Before Day 1. Day 1 starts early on the Acropolis, so keep the first evening easy.Details
From the airport
The airport is about thirty kilometers east of the center. The metro, a suburban train, an express bus and taxis all run into the city, so pick whichever suits your hotel, and allow longer in the rush hour.
Settling in
Check-in is usually in the afternoon. Many streets in the old center are steep, narrow or paved with polished stone, so wear shoes with a good grip.
First evening
Walk the lanes of Plaka and look up: the Acropolis is lit after dark and can be seen from many corners. Eat a meal at a slow pace and go to bed early.

Day 1. The Acropolis and the old slopes

4 stops · 1.2 km

The big sight comes first, while it is cool and quiet. Then the museum beside it, a giant temple and an evening in the oldest neighborhood.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time, book ahead

    Acropolis and the Parthenon

The rock above the city, with the Parthenon, the porch of the Caryatids and the great gateway. Go as early as you can, and check ahead for timed tickets and whether a combined pass covers other sites.

Go when First thing in the morning, before the tour groups and the heat arrive.

Local tip The marble is worn smooth and slippery, so wear shoes with grip. There is little shade, so bring water and a hat.

  2. Treat

A koulouri and a Greek coffee

A koulouri is a ring of bread covered in sesame seeds, sold from street stalls and bakeries in the morning. Pair it with a small cup of Greek coffee, thick and strong, or a frappé.

Local tip Buy it fresh from a stall on your way up, and bring it along for a break under a tree.

    Acropolis Museum

A glass and concrete museum at the foot of the rock, built over the remains of an ancient neighborhood. Its top floor shows the Parthenon sculptures. Cool and indoors, so it suits the middle of the day.

Go when Midday, when the rock outside is hot and crowded.

Local tip Go up to the top floor first. The hall is turned to match the Parthenon, and you can look through the glass at the temple itself.

  4. Lunch

    A souvlaki or gyro

Grilled meat on a skewer, or sliced from a spit and wrapped in a warm pita with tomato, onion and yogurt sauce. The quick local lunch, found on almost every street corner.

Local tip Ask for it wrapped to go and eat in a nearby park, or sit down for a plate with the pita on the side.

    Temple of Olympian Zeus

The columns of a huge temple that took centuries to finish. Fifteen still stand, with the Acropolis behind them. Hadrian’s Arch is a short walk away. Check ahead for entry.

Go when Afternoon, when the light is softer on the columns.

Local tip Stand at the foot of a column and look up to see how big it is. The Acropolis rises behind them, so it is a good place for a photo.

    Plaka

The oldest neighborhood of Athens, a web of narrow lanes and neoclassical houses under the Acropolis. A good place to walk at dusk and stay for dinner.

Go when Early evening, before sunset (about 8:00 PM), when the lanes cool down and the Acropolis begins to glow.

Local tip Wander away from the main shopping lane, up the steps and into the quiet side streets, where the old houses and cats are.

  7. Dinner

    A taverna dinner

A taverna is a casual restaurant serving Greek home cooking: grilled fish or lamb, roasted vegetables, a salad of tomato, cucumber and feta, and plenty of bread to share.

Local tip Order a few plates for the table and let them arrive one by one. Dinner starts late here, so a seat at eight is early.

If it rains. The Acropolis rock turns slippery in rain, so wait for a break or swap it for the Acropolis Museum, which is dry and has the sculptures up close. Keep Plaka for the evening.

Day 2. The ancient markets

4 stops · 1.1 km

The old city at street level. The Greek and Roman marketplaces, the square at Monastiraki and a rock that looks over it all at sunset.

  1. 1

    Ancient Agora of Athens

The marketplace and meeting place of ancient Athens, with the best preserved temple in Greece, the Temple of Hephaestus, on the hill above and a rebuilt colonnade that holds a museum. Check ahead for entry.

Go when Morning, when the paths are quiet and the light is clear.

Local tip Walk up to the Temple of Hephaestus first, then come down to the rebuilt colonnade and its small museum.

  4. Lunch

    Spinach and cheese pies

A bare rock just below the Acropolis, where an ancient court met. Climb the worn steps for a view over the old agora and the city as the sun goes down.

Go when Evening, before sunset (about 8:00 PM), for the view over the old agora.

Local tip The rock is steep and polished smooth, so take care on the steps and skip it if the stone is wet.

  7. Dinner

    A meze dinner

A meze meal is many small plates shared at the table: dips, fried cheese, grilled octopus, meatballs and vegetables, served with a glass of local wine or tsipouro. The streets north of Monastiraki, in Psyri, are lined with places that cook this way.

Local tip Order two or three plates at a time, then add more if you are still hungry.

If it rains. This is the most outdoor day. The Stoa of Attalos museum in the agora is dry, and the Tower of the Winds can be seen in a few minutes. If it pours, skip the rock and move to the museums of Day 3.

Day 3. Museums and a hill at sunset

4 stops · 4.0 km

A day for the hot or rainy hours: two museums, an all-marble stadium and the hill that looks over the whole city.

  1. 1
    MorningPick your galleries

    National Archaeological Museum

The largest archaeological museum in the country, with a gold funeral mask from Mycenae, bronze statues from the sea and the Antikythera Mechanism. Choose a few rooms and give them time.

Go when First thing in the morning, before the rooms fill up.

Local tip Start with the Mycenaean gold, then the bronzes, and leave time for the Antikythera Mechanism. Trying to see every room is a long day.

    Greek yogurt with honey

Thick strained yogurt topped with honey and walnuts is the simple Greek breakfast or snack. A bakery or a cafe will serve it in a bowl.

  4. Lunch

A home-cooked dish of the day

Many neighborhood places near the museum serve a dish of the day cooked in the oven: lamb with potatoes, stuffed tomatoes, or beans in tomato sauce. Honest, filling food.

Local tip Many places let you look at the dishes in the kitchen and point to what you want.

  7. Dinner

    Dinner in Kolonaki

Local tip Walk down by the lanes from the hill and choose a place with a table outside.

If you have a few hours
Have a slow coffee near Syntagma Square and walk through the shady paths of the National Garden before you go.
