From average weather, 2021 to 2025: warm, sunny days with little rain score highest (the air stands in for the sea, which is not included). Crowds and prices change through the year, so check them before you book.
Arrival day
Before Day 1. The coast is steep and the road is narrow, so arrive light and let the first evening be slow.Details
Getting to the coast
Most visitors fly into Naples and reach the coast by a pre-booked transfer, a ferry or the train and a bus. Salerno works from the other end. Check the ferry and bus routes ahead, because the sea and the season change them.
Pack light
Many streets here are staircases, and the hotel may be a long climb from the nearest road. A soft bag you can carry up a flight of steps is much easier than a big hard case. Ask your hotel how far the climb is.
Leave the car
The coast road is narrow, twisting and busy, and parking is scarce. Ferries and local buses reach every town in this plan, so the days are easier without a car. If you do drive, collect it only when you leave.
First evening
Drop your bags, walk to the nearest square or the water and sit with something cold to drink. Day 1 starts in Positano, so there is nothing to hurry for tonight.

Amalfi Cathedral
A striped cathedral at the top of a wide staircase, with a bronze door and a cool cloister of pointed arches beside it. The Cloister of Paradise is a short walk from the nave.
Go whenMorning, before the day trippers.
Local tip Climb the wide stairway slowly, step inside, then spend a few minutes in the cloister, where the arches and the quiet are the point.
A tiny village just along the coast from Amalfi, packed around a small square and a small beach. Reach it on foot along the old path from Amalfi if you like.
Go whenMorning, before the beach fills.
Local tip Take the old stone path from Amalfi and walk in under the arch. Sit by the church steps and watch the village wake up.
Small fried fish and squid served in a paper cone, with a wedge of lemon. Eat it by the harbour and watch the boats.
Local tip Squeeze the lemon over it while it is still hot.

Emerald Grotto
A sea cave where light from under the water turns the inside a deep green. A short stairway or a boat from the shore takes you in. Check ahead, because the sea decides.
Go whenAfternoon, if the sea is calm.
Local tip The cave depends on the sea, so check ahead and have a second plan, such as a swim, if it is not open.
Colatura di alici is a clear, salty anchovy sauce that comes from the nearby fishing village of Cetara. A little goes a long way on a plate of spaghetti.
Local tip It is a strong flavor, so order one plate to share first.
If it rains. Amalfi Cathedral is covered, so keep it. Move Atrani and Emerald Grotto to a dry day if you can.
Day 2. Praiano and the Path of the Gods and Positano

Path of the Gods
A famous high trail along the cliffs above the sea, with wide views over the coast and the islands. Wear shoes with a good grip, bring water, and turn back whenever you like.
Go whenEarly morning, before the heat.
Local tip The trail is high and exposed, with steps and uneven stone. Wear shoes with a good grip, carry water and turn back if the weather changes.
The one special dinner of the week. Book a table on a terrace above the water, and choose scialatielli with seafood, a thick fresh pasta of the coast, with a bottle of local white wine.
Local tip Book ahead, ask for a table at the edge, and allow the evening to stretch out with no plans after.
If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Santa Maria Assunta
The church with the tiled dome at the heart of Positano. Step in for a cool, quiet minute before the lanes fill up.
Go whenMorning, before the lanes fill up.
Local tip Look up at the tiled dome, then step back out and walk down the lanes toward the sea, where every turn opens a new view.

MiddayWorth the time
Fornillo Beach
A smaller, calmer cove just west of the main beach, reached by a short walk along the cliff path. Quieter, with a pebbly shore and a view back at the village.
Go whenLate morning, then stay for a long lunch.
Local tip Walk the cliff path from the main beach. The way is short, a little uneven and well worth it for the quiet at the end.
If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.
Departure day
After the last day. The road out can be slow, so give the morning a generous margin and keep the last hours easy.Details
The last morning
Plan a slow breakfast and a last swim or walk close to the hotel. The coast looks different in the early light, and the lanes are quiet before the day boats arrive.
Getting your bags down
If your hotel is up a long set of steps, ask the staff how luggage gets to the road. Some hotels will arrange a porter or a car to meet you, so ask the night before.
Back to the airport
The drive or ferry back to Naples or Salerno can take longer than the map suggests, because the coast road slows to a crawl in busy months. Leave early, and check the sea is calm if you are taking a ferry.
If you have a free afternoon
Spend it by the sea in the town you are leaving, with a lemon granita, and let someone else watch the clock.
