Arrival day

Before Day 1. The coast is steep and the road is narrow, so arrive light and let the first evening be slow.Details
Getting to the coast
Most visitors fly into Naples and reach the coast by a pre-booked transfer, a ferry or the train and a bus. Salerno works from the other end. Check the ferry and bus routes ahead, because the sea and the season change them.
Pack light
Many streets here are staircases, and the hotel may be a long climb from the nearest road. A soft bag you can carry up a flight of steps is much easier than a big hard case. Ask your hotel how far the climb is.
Leave the car
The coast road is narrow, twisting and busy, and parking is scarce. Ferries and local buses reach every town in this plan, so the days are easier without a car. If you do drive, collect it only when you leave.
First evening
Drop your bags, walk to the nearest square or the water and sit with something cold to drink. Day 1 starts in Positano, so there is nothing to hurry for tonight.

Day 1. Positano, slow and vertical

3 stops · 0.9 km

A gentle first day in a village built straight down a cliff. Late breakfast, a swim, and the lanes in the golden hour.

  1. Breakfast

    A lemon granita

Shaved ice with the juice of the big local lemons, sharp and cold. A slow start to a warm morning, eaten on a step in the shade.

Local tip Order it in the cup, and eat it before it melts.

    MorningWorth a short visit

    Santa Maria Assunta

The church with the tiled dome at the heart of Positano. Step in for a cool, quiet minute before the lanes fill up.

Go when Morning, before the lanes fill up.

Local tip Look up at the tiled dome, then step back out and walk down the lanes toward the sea, where every turn opens a new view.

    About 6 min walk0.5 km

    MiddayWorth the time

    Fornillo Beach

A smaller, calmer cove just west of the main beach, reached by a short walk along the cliff path. Quieter, with a pebbly shore and a view back at the village.

Go when Late morning, then stay for a long lunch.

Local tip Walk the cliff path from the main beach. The way is short, a little uneven and well worth it for the quiet at the end.

  4. Lunch

    Spaghetti with clams

Spaghetti alle vongole is a plain, garlicky pasta with clams from the bay. Eat it near the water with a glass of cold white wine.

    Spiaggia Grande

The main beach of Positano, a long curve of dark pebbles below the pastel houses. Come back as the light turns gold and the village glows.

Go when Late afternoon, around sunset (about 7:11 PM), when the colors warm up.

Local tip Walk to the end of the beach and look back at the village. It is the view you will remember when you are home.

  6. Dinner

A lemon dessert by the beach

The delizia al limone is a small sponge dome filled with lemon cream, a classic of the coast. A sweet end to a day of walking.

Local tip Share one with two spoons and take your time.

If it rains. Keep the church and a long lunch, and skip the cliff path to Fornillo until the stones dry. Come back to the beach when the sun returns.

Day 2. The Path of the Gods and Praiano

Local tip Book ahead, ask for a table at the edge, and allow the evening to stretch out with no plans after.

If it rains. The Path of the Gods is slippery in the rain and the views disappear. Swap it for a slow day in Praiano and do the trail on a clear one.

If it rains. The ruins have little cover, so a wet day is hard. Move Pompeii to a dry day if you can, and take a rain jacket if you cannot.

Departure day

After the last day. The road out can be slow, so give the morning a generous margin and keep the last hours easy.Details
The last morning
Plan a slow breakfast and a last swim or walk close to the hotel. The coast looks different in the early light, and the lanes are quiet before the day boats arrive.
Getting your bags down
If your hotel is up a long set of steps, ask the staff how luggage gets to the road. Some hotels will arrange a porter or a car to meet you, so ask the night before.
Back to the airport
The drive or ferry back to Naples or Salerno can take longer than the map suggests, because the coast road slows to a crawl in busy months. Leave early, and check the sea is calm if you are taking a ferry.
If you have a free afternoon
Spend it by the sea in the town you are leaving, with a lemon granita, and let someone else watch the clock.
