Arrival day

Before Day 1. The coast is steep and the road is narrow, so arrive light and let the first evening be slow.Details
Getting to the coast
Most visitors fly into Naples and reach the coast by a pre-booked transfer, a ferry or the train and a bus. Salerno works from the other end. Check the ferry and bus routes ahead, because the sea and the season change them.
Pack light
Many streets here are staircases, and the hotel may be a long climb from the nearest road. A soft bag you can carry up a flight of steps is much easier than a big hard case. Ask your hotel how far the climb is.
Leave the car
The coast road is narrow, twisting and busy, and parking is scarce. Ferries and local buses reach every town in this plan, so the days are easier without a car. If you do drive, collect it only when you leave.
First evening
Drop your bags, walk to the nearest square or the water and sit with something cold to drink. Day 1 starts in Positano, so there is nothing to hurry for tonight.

Day 1. Amalfi, Atrani and the Emerald Grotto and Positano

    Amalfi Cathedral

A striped cathedral at the top of a wide staircase, with a bronze door and a cool cloister of pointed arches beside it. The Cloister of Paradise is a short walk from the nave.

Go when Morning, before the day trippers.

Local tip Climb the wide stairway slowly, step inside, then spend a few minutes in the cloister, where the arches and the quiet are the point.

    Path of the Gods

A famous high trail along the cliffs above the sea, with wide views over the coast and the islands. Wear shoes with a good grip, bring water, and turn back whenever you like.

Go when Early morning, before the heat.

Local tip The trail is high and exposed, with steps and uneven stone. Wear shoes with a good grip, carry water and turn back if the weather changes.

  3. Lunch

    A picnic for the trail

Fresh bread, tomatoes, a ball of mozzarella and a piece of fruit from a village shop. Eat it on a rock with the sea below.

Local tip Buy it in the morning and carry water for two.

    EveningWorth the time

    Spiaggia Grande

The main beach of Positano, a long curve of dark pebbles below the pastel houses. Come back as the light turns gold and the village glows.

Go when Late afternoon, around sunset (about 7:11 PM), when the colors warm up.

Local tip Walk to the end of the beach and look back at the village. It is the view you will remember when you are home.

  5. Dinner

A lemon dessert by the beach

The delizia al limone is a small sponge dome filled with lemon cream, a classic of the coast. A sweet end to a day of walking.

Local tip Share one with two spoons and take your time.

If it rains. Amalfi Cathedral is covered, so keep it. Move Path of the Gods and Spiaggia Grande to a dry day if you can.

Go when Afternoon, when the paths are shaded.

Local tip Walk the long central alley slowly, with stops at the benches. It is a garden for wandering, not for rushing.

  6. Dinner

    Grilled fish and lemon

A whole fish from the bay, grilled and served with a wedge of lemon and a salad. A calm dinner after the day in the gardens.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The road out can be slow, so give the morning a generous margin and keep the last hours easy.Details
The last morning
Plan a slow breakfast and a last swim or walk close to the hotel. The coast looks different in the early light, and the lanes are quiet before the day boats arrive.
Getting your bags down
If your hotel is up a long set of steps, ask the staff how luggage gets to the road. Some hotels will arrange a porter or a car to meet you, so ask the night before.
Back to the airport
The drive or ferry back to Naples or Salerno can take longer than the map suggests, because the coast road slows to a crawl in busy months. Leave early, and check the sea is calm if you are taking a ferry.
If you have a free afternoon
Spend it by the sea in the town you are leaving, with a lemon granita, and let someone else watch the clock.
