Arrival day

Before Day 1. The old center is compact, so settle in on foot and keep the evening easy.Details
From the airport
Vienna's airport lies outside the city. A train and a bus both run to the center, and a taxi is simple but slower at the busy hours. Look up the stop nearest your hotel before you leave the terminal.
Getting around
The old center is small enough to walk. For everything farther out, the U-Bahn, trams and buses cover the whole city. Buy your ticket before you board, and check at the stop how to validate it.
The coffeehouse rule
In a traditional coffeehouse nobody hurries you. One coffee buys you the table for as long as you like, and a glass of water usually comes with it. Plan a long sit most days.
The evening you land
Walk the streets around the cathedral and have an early dinner. Day 1 starts in the old center, so you will already be close.

Departure day

After the last day. Look up the way to the airport the night before and the morning stays calm.Details
Check-out
If your flight is in the afternoon, ask the front desk to hold your bags. That leaves room for a slow coffeehouse breakfast and one last walk on the Ring.
To the airport
A train and a bus link the center with the airport. Find the departure point the evening before, and leave early on a weekday, when the trams and roads fill up.
Something to take home
Coffee, chocolate and apricot jam from the Wachau are the usual gifts. Buy them on the last day, and check your airline's rules for food and liquids.
If you have a few hours
Sit in a coffeehouse with a melange and a newspaper. It is the Viennese way to say goodbye.
