5 days in Moravia and its wine country

Five slow days in the wine country of Czechia: two in Brno, the university city, with a castle on a hill and a famous modernist villa, then Mikulov and the Palava hills, the chateaux and parks of Lednice and Valtice, and a long last lunch in Znojmo. Cellar tastings on the way, with a driver, a tour or a bike.

Arrival day

Before Day 1. Brno is walkable, so you can start the moment you drop your bags.Details
Flying in
Brno has its own small airport, a bus or taxi ride from the center. Many visitors fly into Vienna instead and take a train or a coach north to Brno, so compare both when you book and check ahead how the connection works.
Getting around
Brno is easy on foot, with trams and buses for the longer hops. Trains run to many of the towns in South Moravia. The wine villages are spread out, so a rental car, a tour or a bike makes those days simpler.
Wine and driving
Wine is part of days 3 to 5. Plan who drives before you set out, or hire a driver, take a tour or cycle. Plan this ahead, because there is no good way to drive after a tasting.
First evening
Walk to Freedom Square and the old streets around it, and have an early dinner. Day 1 begins at that same square, so you will already be close.

Day 1. The old center of Brno

4 stops · 1.1 km

An easy first day on foot in the university city. The big sights sit close together, with a castle on the hill for the afternoon and a market square for lunch.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Freedom Square

The long, open square at the heart of Brno, ringed by painted townhouses and a black, bullet-shaped clock of glass. A good place to get your bearings and see the city at its own pace.

Go when Morning, before the shops open and the square is quiet.

Local tip Look up at the facades rather than at the shop windows. The painted fronts and the carved doorways are the best part.

    MorningWorth a short visit

    Vegetable Market

An old market square, lined with stalls selling fruit, vegetables and flowers, with a baroque fountain at one end. Under it runs a network of old cellars, so check ahead if a visit is open.

Go when Morning, when the stalls are full.

Local tip Walk to the fountain at the top of the square and climb its steps for the view down over the stalls.

  3. 3
    MiddayWorth the time

Cathedral of St Peter and Paul

The two slim spires on the hill above the market are the symbol of the city. Step inside, and check ahead if the tower is open to climb. The noon bells are tied to a local story from an old siege, so ask a local to tell it.

Go when Late morning, so you hear the bells at noon.

Local tip The best view of the two spires is from the park on the hill beside the cathedral. Walk around it before you go in.

  4. Lunch

    Svíčková with dumplings

The Czech Sunday classic is beef in a creamy root vegetable sauce, with slices of bread dumpling, cranberries and a spoon of cream. A heavy, comforting lunch.

Local tip Order it for lunch and keep the afternoon walk slow.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Špilberk Castle

A fortress on a hill above the old town, once a royal castle and later a prison, now a museum. Walk up through the park for the view over the red roofs, and check ahead for which parts you can enter.

Go when Afternoon, when the light is soft over the city.

Local tip Walk up through the park rather than taking a car, and look back at the cathedral as the town opens below you.

  6. Dinner

Roast duck with cabbage and dumplings

Roast duck with red cabbage and bread or potato dumplings is the dish of the Moravian table, especially in autumn. Look for it on menus in the old center.

Local tip Duck is usually shared in large portions, so ask about a half portion for two.

If it rains. Keep the cathedral and the castle museum, which have indoor rooms, and sit in a cafe on Freedom Square. Walk the market square between showers.

Day 2. Brno modernism and its underground

3 stops · 1.6 km

A day of clean lines and quiet cellars. The villa is the big sight and needs a booked time. The crypt is solemn, and the afternoon is for a cafe.

  1. 1
    MorningBook ahead

    Villa Tugendhat

A modernist family house from 1930 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tickets sell out, so book well ahead, and check ahead for how the visits are run.

Go when Morning, at the time you booked.

Local tip Tickets sell out well ahead, so book as soon as your dates are set. The house is best seen slowly, room by room, with the garden to finish.

  2. 2
    MiddayWorth a short visit

    Capuchin Crypt

A crypt under the Capuchin monastery where the bodies of monks were naturally preserved. It holds human remains, so visit quietly and with respect. Check ahead for how and when you can go in.

Go when Midday, when the streets above are busy.

Local tip It is a quiet place and it holds human remains, so speak softly and take photographs only if they are allowed.

  3. Lunch

    Smažený sýr

Smažený sýr is a thick slice of cheese coated in breadcrumbs and fried, served with tartar sauce and potatoes. A simple, filling pub lunch.

Local tip It is the dish most locals order when they want something quick, so look for a busy lunch table.

The oldest secular building in the city, with a crooked tower and a stone gateway. Walk through the passage and look up for the carved figure hanging from the ceiling, which locals love to talk about.

Go when Afternoon, between a cafe and the next stop.

Local tip Walk through the passage and look up for the carved figure. Locals will tell you its story if you ask.

  5. Treat

    A cafe afternoon in Brno

Brno has a long tradition of coffee houses. Pick one with a window, order a coffee and a slice of cake, and let the afternoon go by.

Local tip The old center has many small cafes, so choose by the look of the room.

  6. Dinner

    Moravian sparrow

Despite its name, Moravian sparrow is not a bird. It is slow-roasted pork, served with cabbage and dumplings, and a lasting dish of the region.

Local tip Ask the waiter which cabbage and which dumplings come with it.

If it rains. Most of the day is under a roof: the villa, the crypt and the Town Hall passage. Add a long cafe afternoon and call it a good rainy day.

Day 3. Mikulov and the Palava hills

3 stops · 50.1 km

A day in the south, in the wine country on the Austrian border. A castle on a rock, a hill with a chapel and a cellar tasting. Plan the driver before the tasting.

Go when Morning, before the heat and the day visitors.

Local tip Walk to the terrace for the view over the vineyards, then visit the castle rooms if there is time.

    Mikulov Square

A long sloping square of painted houses leading up to the castle. Under many houses run old wine cellars, which is why the town is the capital of the Moravian wine trade.

Go when Midday, with a long lunch beside it.

Local tip Many of the old houses sit above deep cellars. If a cellar door is open, ask whether a tasting is possible, and book ahead for a group.

  4. Lunch

A long lunch in a wine village

A plate of cured meats, a simple local dish and a glass of the local white at an outdoor table under the vines. Order slowly, and make it the long meal of the day.

    About 9 min walk0.7 km
  5. 3
    AfternoonWorth a short walk

    Holy Hill

A small wooded hill beside the town with a chapel at the top and a path lined with the Stations of the Cross. Walk up slowly and look across the vineyards toward Austria.

Go when Late afternoon, around sunset (about 7:07 PM).

Local tip The path is a gentle climb, so wear sturdy shoes. At the top, look across the vineyards toward the border.

  6. Treat

    A cellar tasting in Mikulov

The Moravian cellar culture is part of the local life: a stone cellar, a few glasses of local wine and a plate of bread and cheese. Choose a small family cellar and taste what the host pours.

Local tip Book ahead. Plan a designated driver, a tour or a walk from your hotel, and never drive after a tasting.

  7. Dinner

    Burčák, the new wine

Burčák is partly fermented young wine, cloudy and sweet, sold in the weeks of the harvest. Order a small glass and ask how long it has been in the barrel.

Local tip It is lively and stronger than it tastes, so take it slowly, and only the season has it.

If it rains. Keep the castle rooms and a booked cellar tasting, and skip the Holy Hill climb, which is slippery when wet.

Day 4. Lednice and Valtice, a park of chateaux

4 stops · 22.3 km

A UNESCO landscape of chateaux, ponds, parks and follies. A cycling day suits it best, or a slow drive between the two chateaux with a stop in the park.

Go when Morning, with the park to walk after.

Local tip Walk the garden side first and look back at the chateau across the lawn. The park is big, so choose one corner of it and leave the rest.

    About 12 min walk1.0 km
  3. 2
    MiddayA climb for the view

    Minaret

A slender Moorish-style tower standing in the park, built as a folly in the 19th century. A narrow stair climbs it for a view across the treetops, and check ahead before you plan the climb.

Go when Midday, between the chateau and lunch.

Local tip The stair is narrow and steep, so climb it only if you are comfortable with that. The tower looks good from the ground too.

  4. Lunch

A glass of Veltliner and a simple lunch

Grüner Veltliner is one of the white wines of the region, dry and peppery. Pair a glass with a plate of bread, cheese and a salad at a table near the park.

Local tip Choose one glass if you are cycling or driving on.

Go when Afternoon, when the light is warm on the ponds.

Local tip The paths are flat, so any rider can enjoy them. Take water, ride slowly, and skip the tasting until the bike is parked.

Local tip Walk the long courtyard, then ask at the chateau about a wine tasting in its cellars. Plan a driver, a tour or the bike for the way back.

  7. Dinner

Goulash and a glass of Frankovka

A bowl of beef goulash with bread dumplings is a standard of the Czech table, and Frankovka is the local red, light and dark with a hint of pepper.

Local tip Ask for a half glass of the red if you still have the road back to drive.

If it rains. Keep the old town and a long lunch, and leave the national park for a dry spell. The castle terrace is best on a clear day.

Departure day

After the last day. Znojmo is a long way from a flight, so plan the road back the night before.Details
Returning the car
Return a rental car in Brno before the last evening if you can, so you are not looking for a parking place or a petrol station on the morning of a flight or a train.
Trains and buses
Znojmo has trains and coaches toward Brno and toward Vienna. Check the first and last departures ahead, because rural lines run less often than the city ones.
If you have a few hours
Buy a bottle or two of the local wine at a village shop, pack it well in your luggage and take a last slow coffee before you go.
