Misión de Santiago de Jalpan
The first of the five missions, finished in the mid 1700s while Fray Junípero Serra lived in the town, long before his work in California. Its stone front is carved with saints and symbols in a local style. It is still a church, so stay quiet during services.
Go when Morning, when the light falls on the carved front.
Local tip Stand on the plaza and look at the whole front before you go in. It is a working church, so cover your shoulders and stay quiet during services. Check ahead on when visitors can go in.
