Arrival day

Before Day 1. The spa towns reward a slow arrival, so keep the first evening light.Details
From Prague and the airport
Direct trains and long-distance buses link Prague with Karlovy Vary, and the ride is a few hours, so check ahead which suits you. The town also has a small airport with a limited number of flights, and a bus or a taxi runs from it to the center.
Hills, stairs and rain
Karlovy Vary sits in a narrow wooded valley, and many streets are steep, with cobbles and steps. Pack flat shoes and a light rain jacket, and keep a small bag for the day. The colonnades are roofed, which suits a wet afternoon.
About the spa treatments
Baths, massages and treatment programs have been a local tradition here for centuries. Some are relaxing, some are medical programs that need a doctor's review, and all need booking ahead. This trip needs none of them, so treat them as an extra and check ahead.
First evening
Take a short walk along the river, have an early dinner and go to bed. Day 1 starts at the Hot Spring Colonnade, which is calmest in the morning, so you will already be close.

Day 1. The spa quarter and the garden, church and hills

3 stops · 0.8 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningA resting stop

    Dvořák Gardens

A green park beside the river with old trees, benches and a quiet corner of the spa quarter. A gentle way to start the day before the town wakes up.

Go when Morning, before the town fills.

Local tip Sit under the old trees for a few minutes before you begin the walk up the hill. Locals use it as a quiet shortcut.

    About 5 min walk0.4 km
  2. 2
    MiddayWorth the time

    Mill Colonnade

A long, covered walkway of tall stone columns, with several springs along it. Pick up a small spa cup, taste the warm mineral water in small sips and walk slowly down the colonnade. Check ahead on which springs are open.

Go when Late morning, when the light falls between the columns.

Local tip Walk the whole length once, then go back to the spring you liked. A small sip is plenty, and it is fine to just look.

  3. Lunch

    Soup and dumplings

A simple Czech lunch is a bowl of soup with bread, or a plate of meat with gravy and sliced dumplings. Hearty, plain and easy to share.

Local tip Ask for a half portion if you want room for a cake later.

  4. 3
    AfternoonWorth a short look

    Sadová Colonnade

A light wooden colonnade with carved details, set at the edge of a green garden. It is a quiet place to sit and rest after the busier ones downstream. Check ahead, because the structure is sometimes closed.

Go when Afternoon, when the garden is calm.

Local tip Sit on a bench in the garden next to it rather than walking on. It is a good spot to read or to watch the river.

  5. Dinner

    A Czech roast with dumplings

A slow dinner of roast meat, dumplings and a sauce is the classic of the region. Choose a small restaurant on a side street and eat unhurried.

Local tip Order one dish to start, since portions are generous.

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Hot Spring Colonnade

A modern hall around the town's hottest spring, which rises as a jet of steaming water inside the building. Watch it, and keep a safe distance. Check ahead on access, since the building is sometimes closed for work.

Go when Morning, when the hall is quiet and the steam rises clear.

Local tip Watch the jet from a few steps back, since the water is very hot. Taste the water elsewhere, from a spa cup, and only a little.

About 2 min walkunder 0.1 km
  2. 2
    Evening10 minutes is enough

    Castle Tower

Local tip It stands next to the Hot Spring Colonnade, so you can see it at the end of a slow walk through the center.

  3. Dinner

    A slow last dinner

End the trip with a plain Czech dinner at a table by the river, and a short walk afterwards.

Local tip Book ahead if you want a particular table, and keep the evening unhurried.

Go when Afternoon on a clear day, or late afternoon around sunset (about 8:02 PM).

Local tip Take the funicular up and the forest path down, or the other way round. The steps up the tower are narrow, so skip them if your knees are tired.

  3. Lunch

A cafe lunch on the hill

A hot soup, a sandwich or a savory pastry in a cafe on the slope. Rest your legs before the walk up to the lookout.

Local tip Choose a table with a view down the valley.

Departure day

After the last day. Work back from the train, the bus or the flight and keep the last morning easy.Details
Check-out and bags
Pack the evening before. If your ride leaves in the afternoon, ask the front desk to hold your bags, so you can have a slow last coffee along the river with nothing to carry.
Back to Prague
The train and long-distance bus stations are a short ride from the spa quarter by taxi or local bus. Check the timetable the night before, and allow time for the steep walk down if you carry a bag.
Flying from here
The small airport has few departures, and the check-in desk may open late, so check your airline's notice ahead. If you fly from Prague instead, leave the spa town early to be safe.
