Trains and the bus
The rail line from Prague runs up the Elbe valley to Děčín and is a lasting route into the region. A local bus then runs up the river to Hřensko, at the foot of the gorges. Check ahead on both timetables, which are thinner in autumn and on weekends.
With a car
A car helps with the far corners, but the car parks near the best trails fill early on fine autumn days. Check ahead on parking and on road closures, which happen after storms and in dry spells.
Gear for the trails
Bring shoes with a good grip, a rain layer and a small light. The sandstone stairs are steep and slippery when wet. Every trail here is worth a check ahead for closures before you set out.
First evening
Walk the river in Děčín and sleep early. Day 1 starts at the castle on its rock, so you will already be close.

Back to Prague
Trains run down the Elbe valley from Děčín toward Prague. Check ahead on the timetable, allow time for the bus down from Hřensko and take the earlier option when in doubt.
Muddy boots
Wipe down your shoes and poles before you pack. After a rainy day on the trails they carry more of the forest than you expect.
If you have a few hours
Take one last slow walk along the Elbe, then leave with plenty of time. Do not squeeze in a trail on the day you travel.
