Arrival day

Before Day 1. The spa towns reward a slow arrival, so keep the first evening light.Details
From Prague and the airport
Direct trains and long-distance buses link Prague with Karlovy Vary, and the ride is a few hours, so check ahead which suits you. The town also has a small airport with a limited number of flights, and a bus or a taxi runs from it to the center.
Hills, stairs and rain
Karlovy Vary sits in a narrow wooded valley, and many streets are steep, with cobbles and steps. Pack flat shoes and a light rain jacket, and keep a small bag for the day. The colonnades are roofed, which suits a wet afternoon.
About the spa treatments
Baths, massages and treatment programs have been a local tradition here for centuries. Some are relaxing, some are medical programs that need a doctor's review, and all need booking ahead. This trip needs none of them, so treat them as an extra and check ahead.
First evening
Take a short walk along the river, have an early dinner and go to bed. Day 1 starts at the Hot Spring Colonnade, which is calmest in the morning, so you will already be close.

Day 1. The spa quarter and the garden, church and hills

3 stops · 1.3 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Hot Spring Colonnade

A modern hall around the town's hottest spring, which rises as a jet of steaming water inside the building. Watch it, and keep a safe distance. Check ahead on access, since the building is sometimes closed for work.

Go when Morning, when the hall is quiet and the steam rises clear.

Local tip Watch the jet from a few steps back, since the water is very hot. Taste the water elsewhere, from a spa cup, and only a little.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Mill Colonnade

A long, covered walkway of tall stone columns, with several springs along it. Pick up a small spa cup, taste the warm mineral water in small sips and walk slowly down the colonnade. Check ahead on which springs are open.

Go when Late morning, when the light falls between the columns.

Local tip Walk the whole length once, then go back to the spring you liked. A small sip is plenty, and it is fine to just look.

  3. Lunch

    Soup and dumplings

A simple Czech lunch is a bowl of soup with bread, or a plate of meat with gravy and sliced dumplings. Hearty, plain and easy to share.

Local tip Ask for a half portion if you want room for a cake later.

  4. 3
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Diana Lookout Tower

A tower on a wooded hill above the spa quarter, with a wide view over the roofs and the valley. A funicular climbs the hill, so check ahead if it is running. Forest paths lead back down, and some are steep, so keep to the gentle ones.

Go when Afternoon on a clear day, or late afternoon around sunset (about 8:02 PM).

Local tip Take the funicular up and the forest path down, or the other way round. The steps up the tower are narrow, so skip them if your knees are tired.

  5. Dinner

    A bowl of goulash

Goulash with bread or dumplings is a warm, filling Czech dinner. A good choice after a day of hills.

Local tip Pair it with a pot of tea or a glass of water, and call it an early night.

If it rains. Hot Spring Colonnade and Mill Colonnade are covered, so keep them. Move Diana Lookout Tower to a dry day if you can.

Day 2. Marienbad and the Slavkov Forest and Loket

    Mariánské Lázně Colonnade

A long colonnade from the 19th century, framed in iron and decorated inside, on the edge of a wide spa park. Walk under it and let the springs and the park set the pace.

Go when Morning, then a long stroll through the park.

Local tip The park around it is wide and mostly level, so it is easier than Karlovy Vary on tired legs.

    Loket Castle

A Gothic castle on a rock above a tight bend of the Ohře river. The name of the town means "elbow" in Czech, after the shape of the bend. Walk around the walls for the river view, and check ahead on visits inside.

Go when Morning, before the day trippers arrive.

Local tip Walk the lane around the rock to see the bend of the river from the other side. The best view of the castle is from the old bridge.

  4. Lunch

A last cafe lunch in Loket

A quiet table in the little square, with a light lunch and a coffee. Watch the town go slowly by before the ride back.

Local tip Linger. There is nothing else to rush for today.

    EveningWorth the time

    Singing Fountain

A fountain in front of the colonnade whose jets rise and fall to music in timed shows, with lights at dusk. It runs in the warmer part of the year, so check ahead on show times and the season.

Go when Evening, when the lights come on, around sunset (about 8:02 PM).

Local tip Arrive a little before the show and find a bench. Check ahead on show times and the season, since the fountain is not always running.

  6. Dinner

A simple dinner near the colonnade

A few restaurants sit on the streets just below the fountain. A plate of local food and an early night is the right way to end the day.

Local tip Keep it short if you plan the train or bus back to Karlovy Vary tonight.

If it rains. Mariánské Lázně Colonnade and Loket Castle are covered, so keep them. Move Singing Fountain to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. Work back from the train, the bus or the flight and keep the last morning easy.Details
Check-out and bags
Pack the evening before. If your ride leaves in the afternoon, ask the front desk to hold your bags, so you can have a slow last coffee along the river with nothing to carry.
Back to Prague
The train and long-distance bus stations are a short ride from the spa quarter by taxi or local bus. Check the timetable the night before, and allow time for the steep walk down if you carry a bag.
Flying from here
The small airport has few departures, and the check-in desk may open late, so check your airline's notice ahead. If you fly from Prague instead, leave the spa town early to be safe.
