Arrival day

Before Day 1. Bellagio has no station, so the last stretch is by road or by boat.Details
Getting here
Most visitors fly into one of the Milan airports. From there, a train to Varenna and the ferry across is a pretty way in, and buses or a car via Como or Lecco also reach Bellagio. The town has no train station, and parking is tight, so check ahead.
Settling in
Check-in is usually in the afternoon. The old town is steps and cobbles, so a small bag is a gift, and ask your hotel about the easiest way up from the ferry landing. Look at the boat timetable now, since Days 2 and 3 are ferry days.
First evening
Walk the lakefront and the arcaded lanes with no plan, then have an early supper. Day 1 stays in Bellagio, so there is nothing to catch and nowhere to hurry.

Day 1. Bellagio

3 stops · 0.6 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningBook a guided visit

    Villa Serbelloni gardens

The wooded park on the hill above Bellagio, with terraced paths and wide views over the lake. It is visited with a guide, so check ahead for the days and book a place.

Go when Morning, on the first visit you can get, when the hillside paths are cool.

Local tip The park is on the promontory above the town, and it is visited with a guide. Check ahead for the days and the time, since places are limited.

  2. 2
    MorningWorth a short stop

    Basilica di San Giacomo

A Romanesque church of pale stone on a small square in the old town. Quiet and cool inside, and an easy stop between the lanes and the lake.

Go when Morning, when the church is quiet and the square outside is still.

Local tip A Romanesque church of pale stone on a small square in the old town. Step in for the cool, plain interior. Check ahead for visiting times.

  3. Lunch

    Risotto with lake perch

Perch from the lake is the local fish. It comes in a creamy risotto, or lightly fried in butter and sage. Make it a slow lunch near the water.

Local tip Ask what came out of the lake that day, and order a small glass of local white wine with it.

    Punta Spartivento

The tip of the Bellagio promontory, where the lake divides into two arms. A quiet viewpoint with the mountains all around, good for a last look at the day.

Go when Sunset (about 7:35 PM), when the light turns gold on the mountains and the two arms of the lake.

Local tip The point is where the lake divides in two. Bring a light layer, since a breeze can pick up here in the evening.

  5. Dinner

    Polenta and a lakeside supper

Lombard cooking leans on polenta, cheese and lake fish. Have a spritz at the water’s edge first, then a quiet supper of polenta with a slow stew, or fish.

Local tip The lakefront restaurants are best a street or two back from the ferry landing, where the tables are calmer.

Departure day

After the last day. Work back from your train, bus or flight, and keep the last morning slow.Details
Check-out
Pack the evening before. If your onward trip is later in the day, ask the hotel to hold your bags, so you can have a last coffee by the water with your hands free.
Leaving Bellagio
Plan the road or boat to your train or airport the night before. A ferry to Varenna and a train toward Milan is the calm way out, and a bus or taxi is the other. Leave extra time on a weekend morning.
If you have a few hours
Walk the lakefront to the far end of the promontory for a last look at the two arms of the lake, or sit with a coffee and watch the first boats come in.
