3 lazy days on Lake Como

Three unhurried days from Bellagio: the old town steps, the lakeside gardens of Villa Melzi, a ferry across to Varenna and a day among the villas of the west shore. Boats instead of drives, and room in every day to sit and watch the water.

Arrival day

Before Day 1. Bellagio has no station, so the last stretch is by road or by boat.Details
Getting here
Most visitors fly into one of the Milan airports. From there, a train to Varenna and the ferry across is a pretty way in, and buses or a car via Como or Lecco also reach Bellagio. The town has no train station, and parking is tight, so check ahead.
Settling in
Check-in is usually in the afternoon. The old town is steps and cobbles, so a small bag is a gift, and ask your hotel about the easiest way up from the ferry landing. Look at the boat timetable now, since Days 2 and 3 are ferry days.
First evening
Walk the lakefront and the arcaded lanes with no plan, then have an early supper. Day 1 stays in Bellagio, so there is nothing to catch and nowhere to hurry.

Day 1. Old town steps and quiet gardens

3 stops · 2.7 km

A day that never leaves Bellagio. Walk the stepped lanes early, spend midday in the lakeside gardens of Villa Melzi, leave the afternoon empty, and end at the tip of the promontory.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth a short stop

    Salita Serbelloni

The cobbled stairway that climbs from the lakefront into the old town, lined with small shops and tall stone houses. Go early, while the lane is empty and the shutters are still opening.

Go when Early morning, before the day boats arrive, when the cobbles are empty and the shops are just waking.

Local tip The stones are worn smooth, so wear shoes with grip. Go up by one lane and come down by another, and you will see more of the old town.

  2. Treat

    Cappuccino and a cornetto

Start the Italian way, standing at a small bar with a cappuccino and a warm cornetto, a pastry like a croissant but a little sweeter.

Local tip Drink it at the counter, as locals do, then take the rest of the morning slowly.

    MiddayWorth the time, check ahead

    Villa Melzi Gardens

A neoclassical villa on the water, with a lakeside garden of old trees, a pond, statues and a path along the shore. Slow, shady and flat, and an easy walk from the center. Check ahead for the season.

Go when Midday, when the paths under the old trees are shady and the water is calm. Spring brings the azaleas.

Local tip Walk the shore path to the far end and sit on a bench by the water. Check ahead for the months and days the gardens are open.

  4. Lunch

    Risotto with lake perch

Perch from the lake is the local fish. It comes in a creamy risotto, or lightly fried in butter and sage. Make it a slow lunch near the water.

Local tip Ask what came out of the lake that day, and order a small glass of local white wine with it.

  5. 3
    EveningWorth a short stop

    Punta Spartivento

The tip of the Bellagio promontory, where the lake divides into two arms. A quiet viewpoint with the mountains all around, good for a last look at the day.

Go when Sunset (about 7:35 PM), when the light turns gold on the mountains and the two arms of the lake.

Local tip The point is where the lake divides in two. Bring a light layer, since a breeze can pick up here in the evening.

  6. Dinner

    Polenta and a lakeside supper

Lombard cooking leans on polenta, cheese and lake fish. Have a spritz at the water’s edge first, then a quiet supper of polenta with a slow stew, or fish.

Local tip The lakefront restaurants are best a street or two back from the ferry landing, where the tables are calmer.

If it rains. Light rain suits the old town, but the stairs are slick, so go slowly. Villa Melzi is soft and green in the wet. Keep Punta Spartivento for when it clears, and swap it for a long coffee if it does not.

Day 2. Across the water to Varenna

3 stops · 0.7 km

Take the ferry to the east shore and spend a gentle day in Varenna: its harbor lanes, a villa with a long garden, and a lakeside walk at the end of the day. Check the last boat back.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Varenna

A small village of pastel houses stacked above the water on the east shore. The ferry from Bellagio is short and pretty. Wander the narrow lanes down to the harbor and the church square.

Go when Morning, on a boat that suits you, when the lanes are quiet and the harbor is still.

Local tip The lanes are narrow and steep. Wander down to the water, then up to the church square. Check ahead for the boat timetable and the last boat back.

  2. Treat

    Gelato by the harbor

Gelato is the walking treat. Take a cone down to the harbor in Varenna and eat it on the wall, watching the boats come in.

Local tip Try the flavors that change with the season, and leave yourself time to sit.

    Villa Monastero

A former convent on the lake, now a house museum with a long botanical garden of palms, cypresses and succulents beside the water. Easy to see slowly, with benches along the way. Check ahead for visiting times.

Go when Midday, when the long garden along the water is bright and the house is cool and quiet.

Local tip The garden is a narrow strip beside the lake. Walk it end to end and stop on a bench. Check ahead for visiting times for the house and the garden.

  4. Lunch

    A waterfront lunch in Varenna

Varenna’s harbor has small restaurants with tables over the water. Order lake whitefish, or missoltini, the dried lake fish that is a local specialty, if you are curious.

Local tip Missoltini is an acquired taste, so share a plate. A simple pasta is the safe choice.

    About 2 min walk0.2 km
  5. 3
    EveningWorth a short stop

    Passeggiata degli Innamorati

The Lovers’ Walk, a narrow lakeside path that runs from the village along the water. Take it as the light softens, then have supper in Varenna before the boat home.

Go when Early evening, when the day visitors have left and the light on the lake turns soft.

Local tip The path is narrow and runs beside the water, so take your time and let others pass. Check the last boat home before you settle in.

  6. Dinner

    An early supper in Varenna

Stay in Varenna for supper after the walk, with pasta, local cheese or fish, and a view of the lights on the far shore.

Local tip Book ahead for a table by the water, and keep an eye on the time of the last boat home.

If it rains. Villa Monastero has rooms to wait out a shower, and the ferry has a cabin. The lanes and the lakeside path are slippery in the wet, so shorten the walk and have supper in the village.

Day 3. The west shore: villas and a lakeside town

3 stops · 14.9 km

A boat day along the west shore. Start with the gardens at Lenno, spend the middle of the day at Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, and end in Menaggio, where the boat home leaves from the lakefront.

    Villa del Balbianello

A villa with a loggia at the tip of a wooded point, with terraced gardens that look over the water on both sides. Walk the shore path from Lenno or come by boat. Check ahead for the days it is open and how to arrive.

Go when Morning, at the first time you can arrive, when the gardens are quiet and the lake is flat.

Local tip The walk from Lenno is shorter than it looks, and the other way in is by boat. Check ahead for the days it is open, and how and when to arrive.

  3. Treat

    Coffee in Lenno

After the villa, stop for an espresso and a slice of cake at a café on the Lenno waterfront while you wait for the next boat.

Local tip Order at the bar, and ask when the boat leaves before you sit.

    Villa Carlotta

An 18th century villa in Tremezzo with terraced gardens of azaleas and rhododendrons, and a house of marble sculpture by Canova and Thorvaldsen. A long, shady place to spend the middle of the day.

Go when Midday, with a long lunch before or after. Spring is for azaleas, and late September for calm paths.

Local tip Start in the terraced garden, and keep the house for the hottest hour. Look for the marble sculpture by Canova inside.

  5. Lunch

    A relaxed lunch in Tremezzo

Tremezzo has terraces along the lake road. Try a light lunch of pasta with lake fish, a salad of local cheeses, or a plate of cured meats.

Local tip Eat at a table with shade, since the middle of the day can be hot.

Go when Evening, when the day boats have gone and the promenade fills with locals.

Local tip Walk the lakefront and watch the boats come into the harbor. It is also where you catch the boat home, so check the last one first.

  7. Dinner

    Dinner in Menaggio

Menaggio’s lakefront and back lanes have casual restaurants. Order the day’s fish or a plate of pizzoccheri, buckwheat pasta with cheese and greens from the nearby mountains.

Local tip Eat early enough to catch the boat home with time to spare.

If it rains. Villa Carlotta has rooms to wait out a shower. If it pours, skip the walk to Balbianello and take the boat, or save it for another day. Menaggio has covered places to sit by the harbor.

Departure day

After the last day. Work back from your train, bus or flight, and keep the last morning slow.Details
Check-out
Pack the evening before. If your onward trip is later in the day, ask the hotel to hold your bags, so you can have a last coffee by the water with your hands free.
Leaving Bellagio
Plan the road or boat to your train or airport the night before. A ferry to Varenna and a train toward Milan is the calm way out, and a bus or taxi is the other. Leave extra time on a weekend morning.
If you have a few hours
Walk the lakefront to the far end of the promontory for a last look at the two arms of the lake, or sit with a coffee and watch the first boats come in.
