Arrival day

Before Day 1. This trip is a drive, so sort the car before you land.Details
Picking up the car
Rental companies work from Glasgow Airport and from the city, so choose the pick up that suits your flight. Book well ahead, and check the size of the car against your bags.
Driving on the left
Traffic keeps to the left in Scotland. If you are used to driving on the right, take the first miles slowly. Automatic cars are less common than manual ones, so ask for one early if you want it.
Single-track roads
Many Highland and island roads have one lane with passing places. Pull into a passing place on your left, or stop opposite one on your right, to let others by, and never park in one. Allow for slow miles.
Midges and weather
Midges, tiny biting flies, are common on still, damp days in summer, so carry repellent. The weather can swing from sun to cold rain within an hour, so pack layers and a waterproof. Day 1 starts with the road out of Glasgow to Loch Lomond.

Day 1. Fort William and Glen Nevis and Glencoe

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MiddayWorth the time

    Glenfinnan Viaduct

A curved stone railway viaduct crossing a green glen, known from films. On some days in season a steam train crosses it, so check the timetable ahead and never stand on the line.

Go when Midday, and check ahead if you hope to see a steam train.

Local tip Take the marked path up to the viewpoint and keep behind the barriers. It is short, but it can be muddy and busy, so leave extra time.

    MiddayPick your walk

    Glen Nevis

The valley below Ben Nevis, with the Ben Nevis visitor center, forest paths and a river. Ben Nevis is a real mountain, and the weather can turn fast, so most visitors walk in the glen instead.

Go when Late morning, when the cloud has lifted.

Local tip Ben Nevis is a real mountain. The weather turns fast, and the top can be cold and in cloud even in summer, so a climb needs the right kit, a map and sound judgement. Turn back when in doubt.

  3. Lunch

    A bowl of Scotch broth

Scotch broth is a hearty soup of barley, lamb and root vegetables, a good meal for a mountain day.

Local tip Eat it with a thick slice of buttered bread.

    Urquhart Castle

The ruins of a castle on a headland over Loch Ness. Walk the old walls and look down the loch, where the monster is said to live.

Go when Midday, when the loch light is bright.

Local tip Walk to the tower on the headland and look down the loch. If it is clear you will see a long way.

    EveningWorth the time

    Glen Coe

A steep-sided glen of high mountains and waterfalls, with a sad history told at the visitor center. Stop at the roadside viewpoints, and keep the walking for tomorrow.

Go when Evening, when the light falls on the ridges.

Local tip Use the roadside viewpoints tonight. The mountains can change character quickly, so keep any climbing for people who know them.

  6. Dinner

    Haggis, neeps and tatties

Haggis is a savory pudding of oats and spiced meat, served with mashed turnip and potato. Order a small portion first, because it is rich.

Local tip Ask for it with a peppery sauce, as many Scots do.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

    MorningA hike with a view

    The Old Man of Storr

A tall rock pinnacle on a ridge above the sea. The path is steep and can be muddy, so check the weather and wear proper shoes.

Go when Early morning, on a clear day. Check the weather ahead.

Local tip The path is steep and can be slippery. Go only if the weather is settled, and turn back if the cloud comes down.

    MorningWorth the time

    Fairy Pools

A string of clear blue pools and small waterfalls beneath the Black Cuillin. The path crosses streams that can run high after rain, so check conditions ahead.

Go when Morning, before the car park fills.

Local tip Wear boots, because the path crosses streams that rise after rain. Check parking and conditions ahead, and keep clear of the steep banks.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Eilean Donan Castle

A small castle on an island where three sea lochs meet, joined to the land by a stone bridge. One of the most photographed castles in the country, so go early.

Go when Afternoon, then drive on toward Skye.

Local tip Take your first photographs from the road, where the whole island is in the frame, then cross the bridge for the rooms. Check ahead on how you will cross to Skye, by the bridge or the ferry from Mallaig.

    AfternoonA hike with a view

    Quiraing

A landslip ridge of tall rock and green slopes in the north of the island, with a path across a hillside and wide views. The path is exposed, and the road to it is narrow and steep.

Go when Afternoon, on a clear day. Check the weather ahead.

Local tip The path is exposed to wind and the edge is close in places. The road up is narrow and steep, so pull into passing places and take your time.

  6. Dinner

    Seafood by the harbor

Portree is a fishing harbor, so look for local scallops, mussels and fresh fish. Walk the quay and pick a place with a view of the boats.

Local tip Book ahead, because the town is small and busy in the season.

If it rains. Eilean Donan Castle is covered, so keep it. Move The Old Man of Storr, Fairy Pools and Quiraing to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After Day 8. The Cairngorms end the trip, so plan the way home the night before.Details
Returning the car
Return the car where you agreed when you booked it, and check the fuel rule and the hours of the return desk. A drop in another city may need arranging ahead, so confirm it before you set off.
By train or by air
Aviemore has a railway station on the line between Inverness and the south, and Inverness has its own airport. Check the connections for your trip the evening before, and book seats ahead.
Drying out
Hang wet boots and coats overnight if you can, and keep a spare bag for anything still damp. A trip through the glens leaves most kit muddy, and a clean bag keeps the rest of the luggage tidy.

Questions people ask

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 2 days in Scottish Highlands, planned for late May. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?

It was planned for most travelers. The pace and the places reflect that, so check it fits how you travel.

Is anything on this plan booked?

No. Places marked "book ahead" need a reservation. Hours, prices and availability change, so confirm before you go.

Can I plan my own days like this?

Yes. Archie drafts a day by day plan for your dates and takes your pace, the weather and who is travelling into account. You can start one from the Archie app.

Can I change this plan?

Yes. It is a starting point you can change to fit your own trip: swap a place, add a day or move the pace.

How much walking is there?

Each day has about 83.5 to 110.7 miles between its stops, and 194.2 miles in all across 2 days. A short hop is a walk and a longer one a ride. Distances are straight-line estimates, so allow extra for the streets.
