Arrival day

Before Day 1. Santa Barbara is small and easy, so keep the first evening light.Details
Getting here
The city has its own small airport, and many visitors fly into Los Angeles instead and drive about two hours north along the coast. The train from Los Angeles also stops near the beach. A car helps for Montecito and the gardens, and the downtown and waterfront stops are easy on foot.
Settling in
Check-in is usually in the afternoon. Ask your hotel about parking, since downtown lots and the streets near the beach fill up, and check ahead on any shuttle that runs along the waterfront.
First evening
Walk down to the water, watch the light fade over the harbor and eat early. Day 1 starts at the Courthouse, which is quietest in the morning.

    Lotusland

A private garden in Montecito with a cactus garden, a cycad garden, a water garden and a long lawn edged with clipped hedges. Visits are by reservation, in small groups, so book ahead.

Go when Morning, when your tour group is small and the garden is cool.

Local tip Visits are by reservation only, so book well ahead and check the rules on parking and what to bring. Wear shoes that are easy to walk in.

    Stearns Wharf

A wooden wharf built in 1872 that reaches out over the water from the foot of State Street, with benches, a small sea center and views back to the mountains. Walk to the far end and sit for a while.

Go when Midday, as a slow walk out and back with a stop for lunch.

Local tip Walk to the very end and turn around to see the town with the mountains behind it. Pelicans often work the water beside the pilings.

  3. Lunch

    Fish tacos near the harbor

Grilled fish in a warm tortilla with cabbage and lime, the classic California beach lunch, eaten at a table close to the water.

Local tip Eat on the early side to miss the lunch rush near the wharf.

    East Beach

A wide, flat beach of soft sand with palm trees behind it, a short walk east of the wharf. Take off your shoes, walk the water line and watch the light go gold on the mountains.

Go when Late afternoon, before sunset, when the sand is cooler and the light turns gold.

Local tip The beach is long and flat, so the walk is easy in either direction. Bring a layer, because the breeze comes up in the evening.

  5. Dinner

A seafood dinner by the water

Grilled rockfish, local prawns or a bowl of clam chowder, a simple dinner after the beach. Ask what is local that day.

Local tip Book ahead on a weekend, and ask for a patio if the evening is mild.

    Old Mission Santa Barbara

A mission founded in 1786, with twin bell towers, a stone church, quiet courtyards and a rose garden across the street. It is a working church as well as a museum, so be quiet and check ahead on visiting times.

Go when Morning, when the courtyards are quiet and the light is soft on the stone.

Local tip Walk the garden and the cloister slowly, and sit a few minutes in the church. Check ahead on visiting times, since it is still a working church.

    Santa Barbara County Courthouse

A Spanish Colonial building with arched halls, painted ceilings and tiled stairs, set in a garden of lawns and old trees. Take the lift to the clock tower for a view over the red roofs to the sea and the mountains. Check ahead on visiting times.

Go when Morning, when the halls are quiet and the garden is still shaded.

Local tip Go up the tower first, then wander the halls and the Sunken Gardens slowly. Check ahead on the visiting times for the tower.

  4. Lunch

A light lunch of salads and grilled fish

Fresh greens, grilled fish and warm bread, an easy lunch in the shade near the lagoon.

    Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

A garden of California native plants in Mission Canyon, with shaded paths, an oak meadow and an old stone dam built for the mission. The trails are gentle and you can follow any of them as far as you like. Check ahead on entry.

Go when Late morning, when the paths are warm but the oaks still give shade.

Local tip Pick one trail and follow it to the old dam. Native plants are quietest in the dry months, but the oaks and sycamores are green all year.

Departure day

After the last day. The coast road can be slow, so leave room for the drive.Details
Check-out
Pack the night before and ask the hotel to hold your bags if your flight is later in the day. A slow last breakfast and one more look at the water fit the trip.
To the airport
The local airport is a short ride west of downtown. Los Angeles is about two hours south by road, and the highway can back up, so allow extra time and arrive at the airport early.
If you have a few hours
Take one last walk along the beach or sit with a coffee in the Sunken Gardens at the Courthouse, then start the drive with the ocean beside you.
