Arrival day

Before Day 1. Mainz is a gentle place to begin, close to the airport at Frankfurt and easy to walk.Details
From Frankfurt airport
Frankfurt has a main rail station at the airport, and Mainz is a short ride from it by train. If you collect a rental car at the airport instead, Mainz is an easy drive on the motorway. Either works for Day 1.
Car or rail pass
The Rhine has train lines on both banks, so the Rhine days work well by rail and by boat. The Moselle is slower by train and the villages are spread out, so a car makes Days 4 and 5 much easier. Many travelers do the Rhine by rail and then pick up a car.
Parking in river towns
The old towns beside the rivers are narrow, and parking is tight and often at the edge of the center. Ask your hotel where to leave the car, and plan to walk the last few minutes.
The weather
Late September is the grape harvest, and the hills are green and gold. Evenings can turn cool beside the water, so bring a light jacket for dinner outdoors. Day 1 starts in Mainz and Ruedesheim, with a first walk beside the river.

  7. Dinner

    Dinner by the two rivers

If it rains. Mainz Cathedral and Marksburg are covered, so keep them. Move Porta Nigra, Loreley and Deutsches Eck to a dry day if you can.

Local tip You can enjoy the castle from the lanes below even if you do not go in. Check ahead for tours inside.

  6. Dinner

    A Moselle supper

A plate of river fish or roast pork and a glass of the local Riesling, served at a table in the market square. A calm end to the river day.

Local tip Choose a table outdoors if the evening is mild, and ask the staff which wine they like with the dish.

If it rains. Eltz Castle and Reichsburg Cochem are covered, so keep them. Move Bernkastel-Kues to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. Trier is a long way from the airport, so plan the route home the evening before.Details
Heading back
From Trier you can go by train or by car toward Frankfurt, or on to Luxembourg, which is not far. Look up the route the night before, because regional trains on the Moselle line run less often than on the Rhine.
Returning the car
If you rented in Frankfurt, leave a full morning for the drive back and for filling the tank. If you booked a one-way rental ending in Trier, confirm the drop-off address ahead of time.
A last morning
Walk once more through the old streets of Trier, past the Porta Nigra, and buy a small bottle of local wine at a shop to take home if your luggage allows.
