Arrival day

Before Day 1. Freiburg is a gentle place to land, and you do not need the car until Day 2.Details
Getting here
Freiburg has no large airport of its own. Many visitors fly into Frankfurt, Stuttgart or the airport just over the border near Basel and come on by train or rental car. Check ahead for the link that suits your flight.
Your car
Days 2 to 7 are easiest with a rental car. Collect it on the morning of Day 2 from the edge of town rather than the old center. In Germany you drive on the right, and signs show speed limits in kilometers per hour. Check the rental terms before you book.
Season and roads
In late autumn through early spring, check ahead for winter tyre rules and for snow on the hill roads. Mountain weather can change within an hour, so keep a warm layer in the car even on a sunny morning.
First evening
Walk the old streets of Freiburg and look for the little water channels set into the pavement, called Baechle. Keep the evening easy. Day 1 starts at the minster, which you will already have passed.

Day 1. Freiburg, on foot

3 stops · 0.6 km

A gentle start in a university town at the edge of the forest. The sights are close together, and the day ends on a hill with a view of the roofs.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Freiburg Minster

The red sandstone cathedral with a tall, lacy spire that dominates the old town. Walk around it, step inside, and look at the carved figures over the doorway.

Go when Morning, when the stone is still cool and the square is quiet.

Local tip Look up at the spire from the square, then walk once around the outside. The carved figures around the doorway are worth a slow look.

The red building with a row of statues on its front, on the minster square. A short look from outside is enough.

Go when Any time you are crossing the minster square.

Local tip Count the statues on the front. They are rulers from the past of the region, and they make a good photograph from the square.

  3. Lunch

    A thin Flammkuchen

Flammkuchen is a thin, crisp flatbread baked in a hot oven and topped with cream, onions and bacon. Easy to share, and a light lunch for a warm day.

    About 7 min walk0.5 km
  4. 3
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Schlossberg

The wooded hill above the old town, with paths up through trees and a view over the red roofs and out to the forest. An easy, shaded walk.

Go when Late afternoon, around sunset (about 9:00 PM), when the roofs glow.

Local tip Walk up under the trees by the shady path. The climb is gentle, and the view is worth a bench and ten quiet minutes.

  5. Dinner

    A plate of spaetzle

Spaetzle are soft, hand-cut noodles, served with melted cheese and crisp onions, or with a mushroom sauce. A simple, filling dinner.

A slow last morning
Baden-Baden is a pleasant place to end. Have a long breakfast, walk once more under the trees of the Lichtentaler Allee and leave without a rush.
Onward travel
