The monastery

Tourliani is the most important monastery of Mykonos

The Panagia Tourliani is the most important monastery of Mykonos, in Ano Mera, seven kilometres from Mykonos Town. According to tradition it was built by fugitive monks of the Archontissa of Paros, who sought asylum on the island.

The icon

One account says the icon was found in the sea at Tourlos

According to another version, the name comes from the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, found in the sea area of Tourlos outside Mykonos Town. The icon is considered to be the work of Luke the Evangelist.

The building

Founded in 1542, it took its current form from 1757 to 1767

The monastery was founded in 1542 where a church of the Entrances of Panagia stood. In 1757 to 1767 the hieromonk Ignatios Basoula renovated it, and it acquired its current form. The domed catholicon has a towering marble spire.

The altarpiece

A gilded Baroque altarpiece was built in 1775 by Florentine artists

The catholicon has an imposing gilded wood-carved altarpiece in the Baroque style, designed and built in 1775 by Florentine artists. The iconostasis covers all three aisles of the church.
