Arrival day

Before Day 1. Palma is easy on foot, so spend the first day without a car and keep the evening short.Details
From the airport
Palma airport is on the edge of the city, and a taxi or a bus takes you to the old town in a short ride. A rental car is only needed from Day 2, so you can collect it later.
Getting around
Palma, its cathedral and its seafront are all walkable. The mountain villages, the north and the south-east are far easier with a car, because the buses are slow and few.
The mountain roads
The roads in the Serra de Tramuntana are narrow and winding, with stone walls and coaches on the bends, and they are busy in summer and early autumn. Start early, drive slowly and let faster cars pass.
The evening before
Walk down to the harbor, find a table outdoors and order a simple plate. Day 1 starts at the cathedral, so you will already be close.

Day 1. The north of the island and Sóller and its port

3 stops · 83.8 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MiddayA drive for the view

    Formentor lighthouse

A white lighthouse at the end of a winding road, on cliffs high above the sea. The road has many bends and several viewpoints, so allow plenty of time and stop where you can.

Go when Early, so the road is quieter.

Local tip The road is narrow, with many bends and cyclists. Go early, drive slowly and pull in at the viewpoints rather than stopping on the bends.

    MiddayA slow ride

    Sóller tram

A wooden tram that rattles from the edge of Sóller down the valley to the sea. A slow, old-fashioned ride, so the journey is part of the day.

Go when Late morning, once the day has warmed up.

Local tip Sit on the side of the carriage with the orange groves, and check ahead that the tram is running that day.

  3. Lunch

    Seafood rice by the harbor

Rice cooked in a rich fish stock with prawns and other shellfish, served in a wide pan. A long, slow lunch with the water in front of you.

Local tip Ask for the rice to share between two or more, since it is cooked to order and takes time.

    EveningWorth the time

    Alcúdia

A small town inside medieval walls, near a long, wide bay. Walk the old streets and the top of the walls, and stay for a quiet dinner after the heat of the day.

Go when Late afternoon, then dinner inside the walls.

Local tip Walk up on to the old walls for a view across the bay, then come down into the lanes of the old town.

  5. Dinner

    Grilled fish and a salad

Fish grilled over a flame and served with a plain green salad and a glass of island wine. A good, easy meal inside the old walls.

Go when Morning, when the light comes through the rose window.

Local tip Stand a little way back in the park below to see the whole front at once, then go in and look up at the glass.

    Deià

A village that climbs a hillside above the sea, with terraces of olive trees and a church at the top. A place to sit for a long lunch with a view.

Go when Midday, then a long lunch with a view.

Local tip Park at the edge of the village and walk in. The lanes are narrow and the hillside is steep.

  6. Dinner

    Sopes mallorquines

A thick, warming dish of thin bread in a vegetable broth, a classic of the mountain villages and an easy comfort meal after a day by the sea.

Local tip Ask what vegetables are in season, and share a plate of cured meats first.

If it rains. Palma Cathedral is covered, so keep it. Move Valldemossa and Deià to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. You end in Palma, near the airport, so the last morning can stay slow.Details
Check-out
Ask your hotel in Palma if it can keep your bags on the last day. Then you can take a final slow stroll to the seafront with nothing to carry.
Returning the car
You will not need the car on Day 6, so hand it back at the airport after Day 5 if you can. That way the last day is free of parking and fuel errands.
To the airport
The airport is a short drive or taxi ride from the center, and buses run there too. Allow plenty of time for the queues at security, which can be long in the busy months.
A last treat
Buy a small box of ensaimadas at a bakery in the old town to carry home. They keep their shape best in a stiff round box.
