Arrival day

Before Day 1. Loreto is small, so the whole trip can be based in town for all six nights.Details
Flying in
Loreto has its own small airport, a short ride from the centre, with a few direct flights from North America and connections through larger Mexican cities. Check the schedule ahead, and book a taxi or shuttle to your door if you can.
The town on foot
The mission, the museum and the waterfront walk are all within a few easy streets of each other, and you can leave the car at home for days one, two and six. Shade is thin, so walk early and late.
A car for the long days
Days three, four and five need a car, or a driver for the day. The road to San Javier is partly unpaved, and Highway 1 north has long empty stretches. Fill the tank in town, carry water, and ask locally about the road before you go.
Heat and hurricanes
Summers are very hot, and the hurricane season runs into November, so check forecasts and keep your plans flexible. Day 1 starts at the mission, so settle in and take an easy walk by the water first.

How much walking? On foot, about 1.8 kilometers a day, and 402.4 kilometers by car in all across 5 days. Distances are straight-line estimates, so allow extra for the streets.

Day 1. The old mission and the waterfront

4 stops · 1.8 km on foot

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningIndoor

Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto

The mission church where the town began, founded by Jesuits in 1697 as the first lasting mission on the peninsula. Loreto was the capital of the Californias for many years. It is a working church, so dress modestly, stay quiet during services and look rather than photograph while people pray.

Go when Morning, before the heat, outside the hours of services.

Local tip It is a working church. Cover your shoulders, keep your voice low and sit for a moment in the cool. Walk round to the side to see the stone.

    MorningBest early

    Loreto Marina

The harbour at the end of the waterfront, where the boats of the national park leave. Walk the quay early and talk to the crews, since they know the day. Operators also run from the harbour of Puerto Escondido, so ask where yours leaves from when you book.

Go when Early morning, when the boats are leaving.

Local tip Ask the crew about the sea and the wind before you book. Use a licensed boat and keep a spare day, since boats do not sail in rough weather.

  3. Lunch

Fish tacos with cabbage and lime

Soft tortillas with grilled or fried fish, cabbage, a squeeze of lime and a creamy sauce, a plain lunch of the Baja coast.

Local tip Squeeze the lime last, and keep a napkin close.

    About 8 min walk0.7 km
  4. 3
    MiddayIndoor

    Museo de las Misiones

A small museum beside the mission, on the Jesuit missions of the peninsula and the people who lived around them. A cool, indoor rest in the middle of the day. Check ahead on when it is open.

Go when Midday, when the street is too hot to enjoy.

Local tip A cool place to learn how the missions of the peninsula worked. Check ahead on when it is open.

    About 6 min walk0.5 km
  5. 4
    Evening

    Loreto Malecón

The waterfront walk along the gulf, with benches, the harbour at one end and the islands of the park across the water. A long, easy stroll as the heat fades. Bring a light layer, since the wind can come up after dark.

Go when Late afternoon into evening (about 6:04 PM).

Local tip Walk it slowly in the cooler hours and stop wherever you like. Look across the water to the islands as the light changes.

  6. Dinner

    Almejas chocolatas

A large brown clam of the gulf, a seafood of the Loreto coast, served fresh with lime and hot sauce or cooked on a grill.

Local tip Ask what is in season, since some shellfish are closed for part of the year.

If it rains. Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto and Museo de las Misiones are covered, so keep them. Move Loreto Marina and Loreto Malecón to a dry day if you can.

Local tip Listen to the crew about the water. Do not touch the reef or the rocks, and keep a safe distance from any wildlife you meet.

Departure day

After the last day. The airport is close, but small flights are early and full, so leave a margin.Details
A short ride out
The airport is only a short ride from the centre, so you can have a slow last breakfast. Book the taxi the evening before, and check your flight in the morning.
Salt and dust
Shake the sand and desert dust from your shoes and bags, and pack wet snorkel gear in a bag of its own. Take any rubbish from the beaches with you, as you did all week.
If you have an hour
Walk the waterfront once more, or sit in the shade by the mission and look at the stone. Spend your pesos before you leave, since they are hard to change abroad.
