5 days in Langkawi

Five unhurried days on the island of Langkawi, made for an anniversary or a honeymoon. Beach afternoons on the west coast, the cable car and the Sky Bridge above the forest, a boat through the mangroves, a freshwater lake on a marble island and a soft last day. A few special moments, and nothing that needs to be rushed.

Arrival day

Before Day 1. You land on a warm island with the beach close by, so the first afternoon stays small.Details
Getting there
Langkawi has its own airport, and ferries run to Kuah and Telaga Harbour from mainland ports such as Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah. Rough seas can hold a ferry back, so keep the day you arrive and the day you leave loose.
Getting around
The island is about 25 kilometres from north to south, with no train. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and a driver for the day all work, and Days 2, 3 and 4 each head out from the west coast by road. If you hire a car or scooter, ask your hotel about the roads and take care after rain.
When to go
The short dry season runs from December to February, and the rest of the year is wetter, with September the wettest month. In the wetter months rough seas and storms can stop boats and the cable car, so check the forecast before Days 2, 3 and 4.
First evening
Day 1 is a short walk on the sand. Settle in, check the flags and ask locally before you swim, and eat something simple. The beach on this coast faces west, so the evening light is worth being outside for if the cloud allows.

Day 1. Pantai Tengah and Pantai Cenang

2 stops · 1.6 km

An easy first day on the west coast. A quieter stretch of sand for the afternoon, then the longer, livelier beach as the light softens. Nothing here needs a time, and the evening is yours.

  1. Lunch

    Kedah laksa

A bowl of rice noodles in a sour, spicy fish broth with herbs, cucumber and pineapple, a northern Malaysian dish and a good light lunch before the beach.

Local tip Tell the staff about any fish or shellfish allergy before you order, as the broth is made with fish. Ask for it less spicy if you prefer.

  2. 1
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Pantai Tengah

A beach just south of Pantai Cenang, usually quieter than its neighbour, with soft sand, trees along the back and a few small cafes. A good first swim and a place to lie down after the journey.

Go when Afternoon, once you have settled in, with a hat and some shade.

Local tip Check the flags and ask locally before you swim, as the sea can be rough in the wetter months. Bring a hat, and put on sun cream again after you swim.

    About 20 min walk1.6 km
  3. 2
    EveningWorth the time

    Pantai Cenang

The most popular beach on the island, a long strip of sand facing west with cafes, small shops and beach shacks behind it. Walk the shore, find a table and watch the sky change over the water if the cloud allows.

Go when Late afternoon into the evening, around sunset (about 6:20 PM).

Local tip Walk the sand first, then choose a table. The beach is busier near sunset, so arrive a little early. Keep an eye on your bag and phone.

  4. Dinner

Grilled fish at a beach shack

A whole fish or a few prawns grilled over charcoal with a spicy sauce, served with rice and a salad at a simple table near the sand. A shack on the beach strip is the usual kind of place.

Local tip Choose a place where you can see the fish on ice, and tell the staff about any allergy first.

If it rains. A beach day is a poor fit for a downpour. Wait out a short shower under a cafe roof, and swim only if the sea is calm and no storm is near. Laman Padi from Day 5 can move here, as it is close by.

Day 2. The cable car, the Sky Bridge and the falls

4 stops · 15.5 km

A day in the northwest, around Gunung Mat Cincang. The cable car goes first, while the air is usually clearer, then the bridge at the top. A forest stair to the falls follows in the afternoon, and a quiet bay for the evening. The cable car and the bridge close in wind and for upkeep, so check ahead.

  1. Travel from Pantai CenangAbout 24 min by car or transit10.1 km
    Where Day 1 ended.
  2. Breakfast

    Nasi lemak

Rice cooked in coconut milk, served with a spicy sambal, fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and an egg. A Malaysian breakfast from a small roadside stall or cafe.

Local tip The sambal can be hot, so ask for a little to start. Tell the staff about any peanut or fish allergy first, as both are in the dish.

  3. 1
    MorningCheck ahead

    Langkawi SkyCab

A cable car that climbs from the base station at Oriental Village up Gunung Mat Cincang to the top station, over forest and, on a clear day, out to the sea. The line is long and steep, and it stops in strong wind and storms and for upkeep, so check ahead.

Go when Morning, when the air is usually clearer than later in the day.

Local tip The cable car stops in strong wind and storms and for upkeep, so ask at the base station or your hotel before you set out. If the top is in cloud, you can wait or come back another day.

    MorningCheck ahead

    Langkawi Sky Bridge

A curved footbridge 125 metres long, hung about 660 metres above sea level from the peak of Gunung Mat Cincang, reached from the top station by an inclined lift. Low cloud can hide the view, and the bridge closes in wind and for upkeep.

Go when Morning, soon after you reach the top.

Local tip The bridge closes in wind and for upkeep, and low cloud can hide the view, so do not count on it. If heights make you uneasy, a look from the platform at the end is enough.

  5. Lunch

Nasi campur at a roadside warung

Rice with a choice of home-style dishes chosen at the counter, such as curry, fried fish, vegetables and egg. A warung is a small family-run cafe, and one on the road near the village suits a simple lunch.

Local tip Point at what you want, and tell the staff about any allergy first. Many dishes share the same pots and spoons.

    About 21 min walk1.6 km
  6. 3
    AfternoonA steep stair

    Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

The Seven Wells Waterfall, a series of falls that spill in steps into seven natural pools on the cliff above Burau Bay, a short way north of Oriental Village. Reaching the first pool is about 900 steep steps through forest.

Go when Late afternoon, in the shade, on a dry day.

Local tip The stair is about 900 steps and steep, so go slowly, rest and bring water. Wear shoes with a grip, as the steps are slippery after rain. Turning back before the top is fine.

  7. Treat

    Cendol

A cold dessert of shaved ice, green rice flour jelly, sweet coconut milk and palm sugar syrup. A cool reward after the climb.

Local tip Ask for less syrup if you like it lighter, and tell the staff about any coconut allergy first.

    About 22 min walk1.8 km
  8. 4
    EveningWorth a short stop

    Pantai Kok

A beach on Burau Bay at the foot of the mountain, beside the marina at Telaga Harbour. A quiet place to sit at the end of the day and look back at the hills.

Go when Late afternoon, to end the day in the northwest.

Local tip Check the flags before you swim. The marina next door has a boardwalk if you would like a drink or a walk before you head back.

  9. Dinner

    Seafood supper by the water

Grilled prawns, squid or fish with rice and a plate of greens, taken at a table near the harbor. The catch changes, so ask what is fresh.

Local tip Ask the staff to describe each dish, and tell them about any shellfish allergy before you order.

If it rains. The cable car and the bridge stop in wind and storms, and the stair to the falls is slippery after rain. Move this day to the clearest forecast, and keep Oriental Village and Telaga Harbour from the extras as a gentler fallback.

Day 3. Mangroves, Tanjung Rhu and the north coast

3 stops · 39.7 km

A longer day by road to the north and east. A boat through the mangroves of Kilim in the morning, a quiet cove at Tanjung Rhu around midday and a dark-sand beach on the way back. Take a driver and keep the day flexible if the tide or the weather is against you.

  1. Travel from Pantai KokAbout 37 min by car or transit23.6 km
    Where Day 2 ended.
  2. Breakfast

    Roti canai and teh tarik

A flaky, griddled flatbread served with a dish of curry for dipping, and a sweet, frothy milk tea pulled between two cups. A Malaysian start to the day at a cafe in the north.

Local tip Eat the roti while it is hot. Ask for less sugar in the tea, and tell the staff about any milk or egg allergy first.

  3. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Kilim Karst Geoforest Park

A mangrove park of limestone cliffs, caves and three river estuaries that stretch about ten kilometres from Kisap village to Tanjung Rhu. Most visitors see it from a small boat that follows the channels. Eagles, monkeys, otters and crocodiles live here and may or may not appear.

Go when Morning, before the heat and while the tide suits the boat.

Local tip Keep your hands inside the boat, as crocodiles live in these waters. Ask the boatman not to stop to feed eagles or monkeys, and keep your distance from any you see. Wildlife may or may not appear.

About 26 min by car or transit11.3 km
  4. 2
    MiddayWorth the time

    Tanjung Rhu

A long cove of pale sand at the northern tip of the island, with limestone outcrops standing in the sea and the mangrove mouth close by. A calm place for a walk and a swim with nothing on a schedule.

Go when Midday or early afternoon, with a swim and a long lunch.

Local tip The sea here can be shallow and the tide changes the beach. Ask locally about the water before you swim, and bring shade.

  5. Lunch

Grilled fish and rice by the sea

A simple plate of fish grilled with turmeric and chili, with rice and a cucumber salad. A cafe or a beach shack near the cove is the usual kind of place.

Local tip Ask what was caught that day, and tell the staff about any allergy before you order.

About 14 min by car or transit4.8 km
  6. 3
    AfternoonWorth a short stop

    Black Sand Beach

Pantai Pasir Hitam, a beach on the north coast named for its dark sand. A quiet stop to walk the shoreline and look at the sand, with a craft complex close by if you want to look at local work.

Go when Afternoon, as a slow stop on the way back.

Local tip It is a place to walk and look rather than to swim, so check the water and the flags first. The sand can be hot underfoot at midday.

  7. Treat

    Fresh coconut water

A green coconut opened for you, with cool, lightly sweet water inside and soft flesh to scrape out with a spoon. Stalls by the beaches sell them.

Local tip Ask for it without ice if you prefer. Coconut is a tree nut for some people, so tell the staff about any allergy first.

If it rains. Rough weather makes the mangrove boat slow or unavailable, so check ahead and swap this day with another if needed. Add the craft complex or the museum from the extras for a roofed hour.

Day 4. Dayang Bunting lake, Eagle Square and Kuah

3 stops · 39.0 km

A day by boat and then in town. The island of Dayang Bunting and its freshwater lake in the morning, then Kuah for the eagle sculpture, the waterfront and an evening out. The boat depends on the sea, so leave this day loose and swap it with another if the weather is rough.

  1. Drive from Black Sand BeachAbout 38 min by car24.6 km
    Where Day 3 ended.
  2. Breakfast

    Kuih and coffee

Small sweet and savory cakes made of rice flour, coconut and palm sugar, wrapped in leaves or steamed in little cups, with a strong local coffee. A morning snack from a stall or cafe in Kuah.

Local tip Point at what looks good, and ask what is inside. Tell the staff about any nut or egg allergy first.

  3. 1
    MorningCheck the sea

    Pulau Dayang Bunting

An island south of the main island with a freshwater lake in a marble hill, known as the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden and part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park. Boats go out from Kuah and other piers when the sea allows. Macaques live nearby: keep your distance and do not feed them.

Go when Morning, when the sea is calmest.

Local tip Boats can be held back by rough weather, so keep the day loose. Ask before you swim in the lake and follow the signs. Macaques live near the path: keep food zipped away, keep your distance and do not feed them.

  4. Lunch

    Fish curry with rice

A mild, coconut-rich fish curry served with white rice and a plate of vegetables. A warm lunch back on the main island after the boat.

Local tip Ask for the curry less spicy if you like, and tell the staff about any fish allergy first.

About 29 min by car or transit13.4 km
  5. 2
    AfternoonWorth a short stop

    Eagle Square

Dataran Lang, a waterfront park in Kuah with a huge sculpture of an eagle, the symbol of the island. One story links the name Langkawi to the reddish-brown eagle, the brahminy kite. Walk the water's edge and look from the shore.

Go when Afternoon, then a walk along the shore as it cools.

Local tip Step back a few paces to take in the whole sculpture. Birds of prey around the harbor are wild: keep your distance and do not feed them.

  6. Treat

    Ais kacang

A heap of shaved ice with sweet corn, red beans, jelly and a stripe of syrup and milk. A cold stop on the waterfront.

Local tip Ask for less syrup if you like, and tell the staff about any allergy first.

    About 12 min walk1.0 km
  7. 3
    EveningWorth the time

    Kuah

The main town of the island, centred on its ferry jetty. Walk the waterfront, look into the shops (the island is duty-free) and eat at a night market or a seafood place. Dress modestly in town.

Go when Evening, when the waterfront is cooler and the food stalls are out.

Local tip Dress modestly in town, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry a layer for an air-conditioned shop. Ask which evening a night market runs, as the day can change.

  8. Dinner

    Satay at a night market

Small skewers of marinated chicken or beef grilled over charcoal, served with a peanut sauce, rice cakes and cucumber. Markets in Kuah sell them on certain evenings, so ask which.

Local tip The sauce contains peanuts, so tell the staff about any peanut allergy before you order. Ask which evening the market runs.

If it rains. Boats to Pulau Dayang Bunting stop in rough seas. If the sea is closed, spend the day in Kuah with a long lunch and the waterfront, and try the island later if the weather turns.

Day 5. Gunung Raya and a slow last day

2 stops · 19.9 km

A soft last day. A drive up Gunung Raya in the morning for cooler air and a view if the cloud allows, then the rice garden at Laman Padi. Leave the afternoon open for a last swim and anything you would like to see again.

  1. Travel from KuahAbout 18 min by car or transit6.8 km
    Where Day 4 ended.
  2. Breakfast

    Pisang goreng and coffee

Banana fritters fried in a light batter until crisp, served warm with a cup of local coffee. A slow breakfast to start the last day.

Local tip Eat the fritters while they are warm. Tell the staff about any allergy first, as the oil may be shared.

  3. 1
    MorningCheck the weather

    Gunung Raya

A forested mountain in the middle of the island, with a road that winds up toward a viewpoint where the air is cooler. Go early, check the road and the weather first and stay on the paths. Monkeys may be about: keep food away and your distance, and do not feed them.

Go when Morning, before the cloud builds.

Local tip The road is narrow and winding, so ask your driver or hotel how it is after rain. Cloud can cover the top, so a view is not promised. Keep to the paths and keep your distance from any monkeys.

About 29 min by car or transit13.2 km
  4. 2
    MiddayWorth a short visit

    Laman Padi

A small rice museum and paddy garden near Pantai Cenang, about how rice is grown on the island. A flat, easy stroll for the middle of the day, and close to the beach for the afternoon.

Go when Midday, as a slow stop out of the strongest sun.

Local tip Wear a hat and bring water. A short visit is plenty, and it sits close to the beach for the afternoon.

  5. Lunch

    Mee goreng

Yellow noodles fried with egg, vegetables, chili and a sweet soy sauce, a simple and filling Malaysian lunch.

Local tip Ask for it less spicy if you like, and tell the staff about any egg or shellfish allergy before you order.

  6. Dinner

A last dinner of grilled prawns

Prawns grilled in their shells with garlic and chili and served with rice, a final seafood supper by the sea. Choose a table with a view of the water if the evening is clear.

Local tip Tell the staff about any shellfish allergy before you order, and ask what is fresh that day.

If it rains. Gunung Raya is a poor choice in low cloud or heavy rain. Keep Laman Padi, and spend the rest of the day indoors with a long lunch or at the pool or beach once the rain stops.

Departure day

After the last day. Leave room, because flights and ferries both depend on the weather.Details
Check-out
Ask your hotel to keep your bags after check-out, so the last morning needs nothing to carry. A slow breakfast and a last paddle in the sea is enough.
To the airport or the ferry
The airport is on the west side of the island near Padang Matsirat, and the main ferry jetty is in Kuah. Fix the ride the evening before and leave a little more time than you think you need. Rough seas can delay a ferry, so ask at the ticket desk.
Duty-free
Langkawi is a duty-free island, so shops sell goods that are taxed elsewhere. Check your own country's rules on what you may carry home, including shells, coral, plants and food, and keep a little time for it on the last day.
