Arrival day

Before Day 1. Innsbruck sits in a valley with mountains on both sides, so look up as you arrive and keep the evening easy.Details
By air or train
Innsbruck has its own small airport on the edge of the city, with a bus or taxi into the center. Trains also run between Munich and Innsbruck through the mountains. Check the connections ahead, because services change.
Weather and layers
Early July in the valley can be warm while it is cold at the top of a mountain. Pack a warm layer, a rain jacket, sturdy shoes and sun protection, and watch the forecast. Weather in the Alps changes fast.
Visitor cards and lifts
Some visitor cards bundle city transport, museums and mountain lifts for a set number of days. Check ahead what is included and whether it suits your plans. Lifts and huts run seasonally, so confirm they are open for your dates.
First evening
Walk the old town and look up at the Nordkette over the rooftops, then have an early dinner. Day 1 starts in the same old town, so you will already know the way.

Departure day

After the last day. Give the journey out of the mountains some slack, because roads and trains can be slow on a holiday weekend.Details
Check-out
Many hotels will keep your bags for the day after check-out, so ask, and spend the last morning in the old town without dragging a suitcase.
Trains and buses
If you head to Munich by train or bus, check the timetable the day before and leave extra room, since delays happen on mountain lines.
The airport
Innsbruck airport is close to the center, so the ride is short. Bus lines and taxis serve it, but check ahead on the bus schedule if your flight is early.
A spare hour
Walk once more along the river and look at the colored houses with the mountains behind them. Then collect your bags and go.
