Arrival day

Before Day 1. The airport is far north of the center, and Hanoi is loud and busy, so keep the first evening small.Details
Before and after landing
Check what your passport needs to enter Vietnam, because many visitors need an e-visa or a stamp worked out before they fly. Noi Bai airport is a long ride north of the center, by taxi, a ride-hailing app or a public bus.
Crossing the street
Hanoi traffic is a steady stream of motorbikes that rarely stops. Cross slowly and evenly, without stopping or running, and let the bikes flow around you. Walk with a local at a busy junction if you can, and keep to the pavement where there is one.
Where to stay
The Old Quarter and the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake put Day 1 and Day 5 on foot, but are loud at night. The French Quarter is calmer, and Tay Ho by West Lake is quieter again. Ask about a quiet room, and for help booking the two day trips.
First evening
Walk once around Hoan Kiem Lake, eat something small in the lanes and sleep early. Day 1 starts at the lake, which is calm and cool in the morning.

Day 1. Ba Dinh and the Temple of Literature and Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter

4 stops · 5.3 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Hoan Kiem Lake

A small lake in the middle of the old city, with a path around the shore, a turtle tower on an island and a red bridge to a temple on an islet. People walk, stretch and drink coffee here early in the day.

Go when Early morning, when people walk and exercise by the water.

Local tip Walk the whole shore once, slowly. The red bridge to the islet temple is the busiest part, so look at it from the path first.

    MorningCheck ahead

    Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

A large, grey monument on Ba Dinh Square where the body of Ho Chi Minh lies. Visitors file through in silence. Dress covers the shoulders and knees, bags and cameras may be held at the door, and the building closes for a period each year, so check ahead.

Go when Morning, as early as the queue opens.

Local tip Dress to cover shoulders and knees, keep your hands out of your pockets and move on quietly inside. The building closes for a period each year, so check ahead.

  3. Lunch

    Banh mi

A crisp baguette, a legacy of the French years, filled with pate, pickled carrot and radish, herbs, chili and meat. Carts and shops near the mausoleum sell it for a quick lunch.

Local tip The fillings vary a lot from one stall to the next, so look at what goes in before you point.

    Hanoi Old Quarter

A web of narrow lanes north of the lake, once a craft quarter where each street sold one thing, and still full of shops, tube houses, small temples and food stalls. Walk with no plan and let a side lane take you.

Go when Late morning, then again after dark when the food stalls open.

Local tip Read the street names: many still carry the word for the trade they once held. Step aside for motorbikes on the pavement, and look up at the narrow houses above the shopfronts.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Temple of Literature

A temple of Confucius and Vietnam's first national university, with a series of courtyards, gates, ponds and a row of stone tablets set on stone turtles. A shady, calm place in the middle of the city.

Go when Afternoon, when the courtyards are shady.

Local tip Walk through all five courtyards in order. The stone tablets on turtles carry the names of scholars. Students come here before exams, so keep your voice low.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Day 2. Ha Long Bay

    MiddayCheck the weather

    Ha Long Bay

A World Heritage bay of thousands of limestone islands rising from the sea. Most visitors see it from a boat that threads between the islands. The mist can hide the peaks for a day, and storms or a typhoon stop the boats, so check ahead and keep the day flexible. Many travelers spend a night on the water instead.

Go when Morning, when the boat sets out.

Local tip Mist and haze can hide the islands, and storms or a typhoon hold the boats in port, so check ahead and keep the day flexible. Wear the life jacket the crew hands out, and tell the crew about any allergy before a meal on board.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Sung Sot Cave

One of the biggest caves in the bay, on Bo Hon island. A stair climbs up to a series of huge chambers with limestone formations lit in colors. Cool, damp and often busy.

Go when Midday, after the boat has anchored.

Local tip The path up is a stair of many steps and the chambers are cool and damp, so wear shoes with a grip. Move with the guide and keep to the marked path.

  4. Lunch

    Seafood lunch on the boat

Cruises serve a set meal of grilled or steamed fish, prawns, squid and rice, with soup and greens, taken on the deck as the islands slide past. The menu follows the catch and varies from boat to boat.

Local tip Tell the crew about any shellfish allergy before the meal.

    AfternoonCheck the tide

    Luon Cave

A low tunnel through an island into an enclosed lagoon ringed by cliffs. It is entered by kayak or a small rowing boat, depending on the tide, and may be closed at high water. The paddle through is short.

Go when Afternoon, when the tide allows the tunnel.

Local tip Kayaks and boats go through only when the tide leaves room, so ask the crew. The tunnel is low, so keep your head down and your hands inside the boat.

    Ti Top Island

A small island in the bay with a curved beach and a steep stair up to a viewpoint over the islands. Climb on a dry day and take your time on the steps.

Go when Afternoon, on a dry day, and back before the light fades.

Local tip The stair is steep and can be slippery after rain. The view from the top depends on haze, so do not count on it.

  7. Dinner

A seafood dinner at the harbor

Restaurants by the harbor at Bai Chay serve whatever fish and shellfish came in that day, steamed, grilled or fried, with rice and soup. Choose a place where you can see what is cooked.

Local tip Ask the staff to describe each dish, and tell them about any allergy first.

If it rains. Sung Sot Cave is covered, so keep it. Move Ha Long Bay, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The airport is a long ride out, and Hanoi traffic slows everything down.Details
Check-out
Most hotels in the Old Quarter will keep your bag for a few hours after check-out if you ask, which gives the last morning a light start.
To the airport
Leave more time than the distance suggests, because the road north fills with traffic and the ride can be slow. A taxi or a ride-hailing app from the Old Quarter is easiest. Fix the plan the evening before.
If you have a few hours
A last coffee beside the lake or a bowl of noodles in the lanes is enough. Keep the day after a long road trip free of anything that has a fixed start.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to visit Hanoi?

By average weather from 2021 to 2025, January to March and November to December are the most comfortable months for walking around Hanoi. This plan is built for late October, which is a good month. Crowds and prices change through the year, so check them before you book.

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 2 days in Hanoi, planned for late October. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?

It was planned for most travelers. The pace and the places reflect that, so check it fits how you travel.

Is anything on this plan booked?

No. Places marked "book ahead" need a reservation. Hours, prices and availability change, so confirm before you go.

Can I plan my own days like this?

Yes. Archie drafts a day by day plan for your dates and takes your pace, the weather and who is travelling into account. You can start one from the Archie app.

Can I change this plan?

Yes. It is a starting point you can change to fit your own trip: swap a place, add a day or move the pace.

How much walking is there?
