Arrival day

Before Day 1. Cooler months suit this plan best, and the evenings do most of the work.Details
Before you travel
Check the current entry rules for your passport before you book, and again a few weeks before you fly. Rules change, so rely on the official sources and not on a page like this one.
From the airport
Dubai’s main airport is linked to the city by metro, taxi and ride-hailing. After a long flight, keep the first evening light: a walk, a meal and an early night.
Heat and dress
The cooler months are comfortable for walking. In summer the heat is strong, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and the evening. Mosques and old districts ask for modest dress: cover shoulders and knees, and carry a light scarf.
Getting around
Taxis and the metro cover most of Dubai. Abu Dhabi and the desert are reached by road: a bus, a taxi, a hired driver or a rental car. Check ahead on how you will travel between the two cities and where you will sleep. Day 1 starts at the Museum of the Future.

Day 1. Old Dubai and the Creek

4 stops · 1.5 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Al Fahidi Historic District

Narrow lanes of low, sand-colored houses with wind towers, courtyards and small galleries. People live and work here, so dress modestly and keep your voice low.

Go when Early morning, before the day warms.

Local tip Wander without a plan. The lanes are short and the courtyards are quiet, and dressing modestly here is simply good manners.

    MiddayWorth a short ride

    Abra Ride on Dubai Creek

An abra is a small wooden boat that carries people across the creek between Bur Dubai and Deira. The crossing is short. Sit at the side and watch the old trading boats tied up along the quay.

Go when Late morning or at dusk, when the creek is busy with boats.

Local tip Sit on the side bench so you can see along the water. Ask before photographing the boatman, and do not stand up while the boat moves.

  3. Lunch

    Karak and a warm pastry

Karak is strong, sweet tea with milk and cardamom, drunk all over the Gulf. Pair it with a warm samosa or a cheese pastry from a small café near the creek.

Local tip Sit down for it rather than taking it away. It is a drink to take your time over.

    Spice Souk

Narrow lanes of sacks and baskets full of saffron, dried limes, frankincense and herbs. Smell first, and ask before you photograph a shop or the person who runs it.

Go when Early evening, when the lanes cool and fill with shoppers.

Local tip Follow your nose. Saffron and dried limes keep well and travel easily, and a smile and a few words go a long way.

    Gold Souk

A long covered arcade of jewelers’ windows, bright with gold. Browsing is welcome, and haggling is part of how people shop here.

Go when Evening, when the windows are brightest and the arcade is cooler.

Local tip You are welcome to window-shop without buying. If you do buy, take your time and compare before you decide.

    Machboos

Machboos is a spiced rice dish cooked with chicken, lamb or fish, a staple of Gulf home cooking. Look for it on the menu of a restaurant serving Emirati food.

Local tip Share one big plate, and try the tangy tomato sauce on the side.

Go when About an hour before sunset (about 5:31 PM), to see the city change from day to night.

Local tip Look up at it from the lake as well. From the ground you see the shape, and from the top you see the whole desert coast.

  7. Dinner

A terrace dinner by the lake

Several restaurants around the lake have terraces that face the fountain. Choose one with a view and make the dinner the end of the day.

Local tip Book a terrace table ahead, and ask for the side that faces the water.

If it rains. Museum of the Future, Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa are covered, so keep them. Move Dubai Frame to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. Leave room on the road to the airport, and the last morning stays calm.Details
Last morning
Keep it near your hotel: a slow coffee, a last look at the water, then go. Main roads can be busy at certain hours, so allow extra time.
If you end in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi has its own airport. If your flight leaves from Dubai, decide the night before how you will get there and who will drive, and do not leave it for the morning.
Friday and holidays
Friday and public holidays can change opening times and how busy the roads and attractions are. Check ahead for anything you want to see on your last day.
Gifts to carry
The gold and spice souks are the old places to buy small gifts, and the big malls keep long evening hours. Choose things you can carry, and check what you may bring home before you fly.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to visit Dubai?

By average weather from 2021 to 2025, January to February and December are the most comfortable months for walking around Dubai. This plan is built for mid November, which is a good month. Crowds and prices change through the year, so check them before you book.

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 4 days in Dubai, planned for mid November. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?

It was planned for most travelers. The pace and the places reflect that, so check it fits how you travel.

Is anything on this plan booked?

No. Places marked "book ahead" need a reservation. Hours, prices and availability change, so confirm before you go.

Can I plan my own days like this?

Yes. Archie drafts a day by day plan for your dates and takes your pace, the weather and who is travelling into account. You can start one from the Archie app.

Can I change this plan?

Yes. It is a starting point you can change to fit your own trip: swap a place, add a day or move the pace.

How much walking is there?

Each day has about 1.5 to 168.8 kilometers between its stops, and 211.4 kilometers in all across 4 days. A short hop is a walk and a longer one a ride. Distances are straight-line estimates, so allow extra for the streets.
