7 days in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

A week built around the evenings. Four days in Dubai with the tall tower, the fountain, the old creek and the beach coast, plus a desert evening, then two days in Abu Dhabi for the great mosque and the museums, and one flexible day. Mornings are for walking, and the lights coming on are the point.

Arrival day

Before Day 1. Cooler months suit this plan best, and the evenings do most of the work.Details
Before you travel
Check the current entry rules for your passport before you book, and again a few weeks before you fly. Rules change, so rely on the official sources and not on a page like this one.
From the airport
Dubai’s main airport is linked to the city by metro, taxi and ride-hailing. After a long flight, keep the first evening light: a walk, a meal and an early night.
Heat and dress
The cooler months are comfortable for walking. In summer the heat is strong, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and the evening. Mosques and old districts ask for modest dress: cover shoulders and knees, and carry a light scarf.
Getting around
Taxis and the metro cover most of Dubai. Abu Dhabi and the desert are reached by road: a bus, a taxi, a hired driver or a rental car. Check ahead on how you will travel between the two cities and where you will sleep. Day 1 starts at the Museum of the Future.

Day 1. The tower, the mall and the fountain

4 stops · 3.2 km

Downtown Dubai in the cool of the day and after dark. A museum in the morning, the mall in the afternoon, then the tower and the fountain as the lights come on.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Museum of the Future

A tall oval building covered in lines of Arabic calligraphy, with exhibits about how life might look in the years ahead. Check ahead for entry, because it is popular.

Go when Morning, when it is quiet and the day is still cool.

Local tip Look at the outside before you go in. The calligraphy on the walls is made of poems and sayings about the future, and the whole building is worth a slow walk around.

  2. Lunch

    A mezze lunch

Mezze is a spread of small dishes: hummus, grilled halloumi, tabbouleh and warm flatbread, shared at the table. A good way to taste a little of everything.

Local tip Order a few plates at a time and add more as you go, so the table never gets crowded.

  3. 2
    AfternoonA cool afternoon stop

    Dubai Mall

A huge mall at the foot of the tower, with an aquarium, an indoor ice rink and a great many shops. A cool place to spend the warm part of the afternoon.

Go when Afternoon, to escape the warmth, then walk out to the lake.

Local tip It is enormous. Pick two things, such as the aquarium window and a walk to the waterfront, and let the rest go.

    Burj Khalifa

The tower that defines the skyline, rising over downtown in glass and steel. Go up to the viewing decks around sunset, and look at it from the ground as well.

Go when About an hour before sunset (about 5:31 PM), to see the city change from day to night.

Local tip Look up at it from the lake as well. From the ground you see the shape, and from the top you see the whole desert coast.

    Dubai Fountain

A choreographed water show on the lake below the tower, with jets rising high to music and light. It is repeated through the evening, so check ahead for times.

Go when Evening, after dark, when the lights are strongest.

Local tip Watch the first show from the edge of the lake or a footbridge, then walk to the other side and watch another. The view and the sound change.

  6. Dinner

A terrace dinner by the lake

Several restaurants around the lake have terraces that face the fountain. Choose one with a view and make the dinner the end of the day.

Local tip Book a terrace table ahead, and ask for the side that faces the water.

If it rains. Rain is rare here, but when it comes it can be heavy and slow the roads. The museum and the mall are indoors, so keep those and move the tower and the fountain to a clear evening.

Day 2. Old Dubai and the Creek

4 stops · 11.1 km

The older side of the city, around the creek. Quiet lanes, a short boat ride and two old markets. Start early or end late, because the middle of the day is warm.

    Al Fahidi Historic District

Narrow lanes of low, sand-colored houses with wind towers, courtyards and small galleries. People live and work here, so dress modestly and keep your voice low.

Go when Early morning, before the day warms.

Local tip Wander without a plan. The lanes are short and the courtyards are quiet, and dressing modestly here is simply good manners.

  3. Treat

    Luqaimat with date syrup

An abra is a small wooden boat that carries people across the creek between Bur Dubai and Deira. The crossing is short. Sit at the side and watch the old trading boats tied up along the quay.

Go when Late morning or at dusk, when the creek is busy with boats.

Local tip Sit on the side bench so you can see along the water. Ask before photographing the boatman, and do not stand up while the boat moves.

  5. Lunch

    Karak and a warm pastry

Karak is strong, sweet tea with milk and cardamom, drunk all over the Gulf. Pair it with a warm samosa or a cheese pastry from a small café near the creek.

Go when Evening, when the windows are brightest and the arcade is cooler.

Local tip You are welcome to window-shop without buying. If you do buy, take your time and compare before you decide.

  8. Dinner

    Machboos

Local tip Share one big plate, and try the tangy tomato sauce on the side.

If it rains. The old lanes and the souks are partly covered, so a showery day is fine for the souks. Skip the abra ride if the water is rough, and keep the district for a dry morning.

Departure day

After the last day. Leave room on the road to the airport, and the last morning stays calm.Details
Last morning
Keep it near your hotel: a slow coffee, a last look at the water, then go. Main roads can be busy at certain hours, so allow extra time.
If you end in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi has its own airport. If your flight leaves from Dubai, decide the night before how you will get there and who will drive, and do not leave it for the morning.
Friday and holidays
Friday and public holidays can change opening times and how busy the roads and attractions are. Check ahead for anything you want to see on your last day.
Gifts to carry
The gold and spice souks are the old places to buy small gifts, and the big malls keep long evening hours. Choose things you can carry, and check what you may bring home before you fly.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to visit Dubai?

By average weather from 2021 to 2025, January to February and December are the most comfortable months for walking around Dubai. This plan is built for mid November, which is a good month. Crowds and prices change through the year, so check them before you book.

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 7 days in Dubai, planned for mid November. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?

It was planned for most travelers. The pace and the places reflect that, so check it fits how you travel.

Is anything on this plan booked?

No. Places marked "book ahead" need a reservation. Hours, prices and availability change, so confirm before you go.

Can I plan my own days like this?

Yes. Archie drafts a day by day plan for your dates and takes your pace, the weather and who is travelling into account. You can start one from the Archie app.

Can I change this plan?

Yes. It is a starting point you can change to fit your own trip: swap a place, add a day or move the pace.

How much walking is there?

Each day has about 1.5 to 67.8 kilometers between its stops, and 144.7 kilometers in all across 7 days. A short hop is a walk and a longer one a ride. Distances are straight-line estimates, so allow extra for the streets.
