Arrival day

Before Day 1. Crete is big and its roads are slow, so choose where you land and keep the first evening easy.Details
By air
Chania and Heraklion both have an international airport. Chania is the closest to Day 1. If you land in Heraklion, you have a long drive west along the north coast, so check ahead for the bus or plan a night on the way.
By ferry
Ferries from Piraeus, the port of Athens, reach the main ports of the island. The crossing is long and the timetable changes with the season, so check ahead for the days and the port that suits your plan.
The rental car
A car is the way to see Crete, because the gorges, ruins and beaches lie far from the towns. Driving is on the right. Mountain roads wind, so a place that looks close on the map can take much longer to reach.
Before Day 1
Pick up the car at the airport or in town, then walk the old harbor of Chania in the evening. Day 1 starts there, so you will already know the way.

Day 1. Chania and the Akrotiri peninsula and Heraklion and Knossos

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

Go when Early morning, when the quay is quiet, and again at dusk.

Local tip Walk right around the curve of the harbor, then step into the streets behind it, where the old Venetian and Ottoman houses stand close together.

Go when Morning, when it is quiet and the heat is low.

Local tip Go through the rooms in order, starting with the earliest. The Minoan frescoes and the golden jewelry are the highlights, so save your energy for them.

Go when Early afternoon is hot, so aim for the first hour or the last.

Local tip Check ahead for timed entry in busy months. Several of the painted walls you see are modern restorations, so read the signs and use your imagination.

    Samaria Gorge

One of the longest gorges in Europe, a walk of many hours downhill through pine forest, a narrow gap between high walls and then a dry stream bed to the sea. It is rocky and tiring, so wear proper shoes and check ahead for the opening dates.

Go when First thing in the morning, with proper shoes, a hat and plenty of water.

Local tip It is a long, rocky downhill walk with no shortcut out, and it opens only in the dry season, with dates and rules that change. Check ahead, and if you want something easier, choose the Imbros Gorge instead.

    Elafonisi

A shallow lagoon at the southwest corner of the island, with pale sand that has a pink tinge in places and a small island you can wade across to. Check ahead for the sea and the wind.

Go when Early or late, when the day-trippers are not there.

Local tip The water is shallow and warm in the lagoon, but the current can pick up on a windy day. Wear shoes to cross to the little island, and carry your water.

  4. Lunch

A beach lunch of graviera and tomatoes

Graviera is the hard, nutty cheese of the island, often served with honey. With ripe tomatoes, olives and bread, it makes a simple lunch near the sea.

Local tip Buy some in the market the day before, and bring it with you, because the west coast has few places to eat.

    About 1 h 23 min by car85.5 km
  5. 3
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Preveli Beach

A beach at the mouth of a river, with a grove of palms along the stream and cold fresh water meeting the sea. Reached by a long path of steps, so wear sandals that grip.

Go when Afternoon, for a swim in the river mouth.

Local tip The path is long and steep, so wear sandals that grip, and bring water. The river water is cool, and the sea is cooler than the other beaches in May.

  6. Dinner

A last dinner with a glass of raki

A farewell meal of grilled meat or fish, with the small glass of raki that often arrives free at the end, a Cretan gesture of thanks.

Local tip Accept it with a smile, and make a toast to the trip.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The roads are slow and the island is long, so work back from your flight.Details
Return the car
Ask the rental office where and when to bring the car back, and fill the tank before you go. The road to either airport takes longer than it looks, so give yourself a generous margin.
Which airport
Your last day ends on the south coast, a winding drive from both airports. Look at your flight, choose Chania or Heraklion, and consider sleeping near it the night before.
By ferry
If you leave by boat, check ahead for the day, the port and the time of check-in. Rough seas can change a sailing, so keep a spare day if you can.
Last taste
Buy a little honey, thyme or olive oil from a village stall, and a bottle of raki if you want one, and wrap it well in your luggage.
