Arrival day

Before Day 1. The hills are quiet and the lanes are narrow, so arrive with nothing planned for the first evening.Details
Getting there
Birmingham, Bristol and Heathrow are the usual airports for a Cotswolds trip, and each has car hire. Trains reach gateway towns such as Moreton-in-Marsh and Kemble, but the villages are best reached by car. Check ahead for train times.
Driving on the left
In Britain you drive on the left. Many Cotswold lanes are narrow, with stone walls, tight bends and few places to pass, so go slowly and pull into a gateway or a passing place when you meet another car. A small car is easier here than a big one.
Parking in villages
Village car parks are small, and the popular ones fill up by late morning on fine days. Arrive early, park at the edge and walk in. Check ahead for how to pay, and keep a little change or a card to hand.
Your base
Stay in or near Chipping Campden or Stow-on-the-Wold, either of which is a short drive from most of this plan. Day 1 begins in Chipping Campden and asks very little of you.

Day 1. Stow, the Slaughters and Bourton and Chipping Campden and Broadway

5 stops · 34.7 mi

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Chipping Campden

A market town with a gently curving high street of honey-colored stone houses and an old covered market hall. The northern end of the long-distance Cotswold Way starts here.

Go when Morning, with a coffee and no plan.

Local tip Walk the whole curve of the high street, then look up at the roofs and chimneys. The honey-colored stone is the point. The market hall stands near the middle.

    Hidcote Manor Garden

A famous garden made as a series of outdoor rooms, with clipped hedges, long views and borders of flowers. Each room is a small surprise.

Go when Morning, before the paths fill up.

Local tip The garden is made of small rooms, so go through them one by one and sit often. Check ahead for the season and for how visits work.

  3. Lunch

    A ploughman’s lunch

A traditional pub lunch of local cheese, crusty bread, pickle, an apple and a salad. Simple, filling and very English.

Local tip Ask for a regional cheese, and a little pickle to go with it.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Bourton-on-the-Water

A village with the River Windrush running through the middle, crossed by low stone bridges, with grass on both banks. Often busy by midday, so walk away from the main street.

Go when Midday, with a lunch beside the river.

Local tip It gets busy by midday, so walk a little away from the main street to the quieter bank, where there is room to sit and the bridges look best.

  5. 4
    AfternoonOnly on a clear day

    Broadway Tower

A tower built as a folly on the ridge above the village, with a view over the countryside on a clear day. A short stretch of the Cotswold Way passes close by, if you feel like a walk.

Go when Afternoon, when the weather is clear.

Local tip It sits on a ridge, so expect a walk up or a short drive. Check the weather first, since the view is the reason to go. Check ahead for how the tower is open.

    AfternoonWorth a short walk

    Stow-on-the-Wold

A hilltop market town around a big square, once a great sheep market. Narrow passageways run off the square between old buildings, and the antique shops are made for browsing.

Go when Late afternoon, when the square turns gold.

Local tip Look for the narrow passageways that run off the square between buildings. They were made to funnel sheep, and they are a good place to get out of the wind.

  7. Dinner

Fish pie at an old inn

The Cotswolds are full of old coaching inns that serve hearty dishes such as fish pie, roast chicken and a pudding to follow. Choose one with a fire and stone floors.

Local tip Ask whether there is a vegetarian dish, since the menus are short.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Day 2. Bibury, Cirencester and Painswick

  2. 1
    MorningWorth a short walk

    Arlington Row, Bibury

A row of old stone cottages by a stream, once homes for weavers and a much-photographed lane. The cottages are private homes, so look and move on quietly.

Go when Early morning, before the visitors arrive.

Local tip Park at the edge of the village. The lane is narrow and the cottages are private homes, so look from the path and do not linger or knock.

  3. Dinner

    A roast dinner

Roast beef, chicken or lamb with roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy, often with Yorkshire pudding. A traditional pub meal, and the heartiest on the plan.

Local tip The roast is a Sunday classic, so on another day ask what the kitchen is serving.

Departure day

After the last day. Leave a slow morning and an easy drive, and let the hills see you off.Details
The last morning
Pack the night before, then take one more unhurried walk round the village you are staying in. A last coffee before you load the car is a good way to leave.
Returning the car
Fill the tank before you reach the airport or the station, and check ahead for the return desk and its hours. Allow a generous margin, because the roads from the hills to the motorways can be slow on busy weekends.
Spare time: Bath
If you have a spare day, Bath is an easy extra, by car or by train with the car left behind. Check ahead for parking and train times, and keep it to two or three places.
