Built
The Friedrichsbad was built between 1869 and 1877
The architect Karl Dernfeld designed the spa in the Renaissance style. It was built between 1869 and 1877, and the Grand Ducal Friedrichsbad opened on December 15, 1877.
Gambling ban
A ban on gambling pushed the town to build a new spa
In 1867 the North German Confederation decided to ban gambling in all of Germany from 1872. Baden-Baden looked for alternatives to remain attractive to spa guests.
Study trip
The designer toured the best baths of Germany and Austria-Hungary
Karl Dernfeld, then relatively unknown, travelled with Dr. Carl Frech. The models were the Raitzenbad in Budapest and the Eberhardsbad in Wildbad. He is also said to have been inspired by the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. Excavations in 1869 found remnants of Roman baths.
Goethe
Two panels on the front carry lines from Goethe's Faust
The lush Renaissance-style facade is adorned with two panels bearing an inscription from Goethe's Faust in gold letters. The lines end with a toast to water and fire.
“Muth wird freier, Blut wird neuer”

The water
The thermal water rises from twelve springs deep underground
The water rises from depths of between 1200 and 1800 metres, from twelve separate artesian springs. It reaches the surface at 56 °C to 68.8 °C. The springs are approximately 12,000 to 17,000 years old.
