Five museums

Five museums were built on one island between 1830 and 1930

Museum Island was originally built from 1830 to 1930, initially on the order of the Prussian kings, to plans by five architects. It consists of the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode-Museum and the Pergamon Museum. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Schinkel

Schinkel's Altes Museum opened in 1830 as the Royal Museum

The Altes Museum was known as the Königliches Museum when it was built on 3 August 1830, and was renamed in 1841. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed it in 1822 to house the royal collection of antiquities. Its arrangement was overseen by Wilhelm von Humboldt.

Rebuilt

The Neues Museum was ruined in World War II and reopened in 2009

The Neues Museum was finished in 1859 to plans by Friedrich August Stüler, a student of Schinkel. It was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt under the direction of David Chipperfield for the Egyptian Museum of Berlin, and it reopened in 2009.

Pergamon

Whole buildings stand inside the Pergamon Museum

The Pergamon Museum was constructed from 1910 to 1930. It contains multiple reconstructed immense and historically significant buildings, such as the Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon.

A new door

In 2019 a visitor centre opened on the site of a Schinkel warehouse

In 2019 a new visitor centre and art gallery, the James Simon Gallery, opened on the site of the former 19th-century Packhof, a service building designed by Schinkel that was demolished in 1938. The Humboldt Forum opened nearby in late 2020.

Day 2, evening

It comes after Hackesche Höfe.
