A hermitage

A hermitage was built in 1511 on what may have been a Guanche burial ground

In 1511 the conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo ordered a hermitage built on the site. The area appears to have been an ancient Guanche necropolis, and the whole valley of Aguere was a place of pilgrimage for the indigenous people of the island.

1534

Saint José de Anchieta, founder of São Paulo, was baptised here

In 1515 the chapel was replaced with a major Mudéjar church dedicated to the Virgin of Los Remedios. On 7 April 1534 Saint José de Anchieta was baptised there. Born in La Laguna, he became a missionary and later the founder of the city of São Paulo and one of the founders of Rio de Janeiro.

A cathedral

Requests for a cathedral were turned down until 1819

Several times after 1515 attempts were made to have it designated a cathedral, but they were not successful. A request in 1783, at the height of the Enlightenment, was again rejected. Finally a papal bull of Pope Pius VII in 1819 made the temple a cathedral and created the new diocese of La Laguna.

Rebuilt

The building seen today dates from 1904 to 1915

The cathedral was constructed between 1904 and 1915 to replace the earlier building begun in 1515. It is best known for its Neoclassical facade, inspired by the Cathedral of Pamplona, and its dome, which prominently dominates the cityscape.

The founder

The conqueror who founded the city lies in the cathedral

In the cathedral lie the remains of Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, conqueror of the island and founder of the city. The historic center of La Laguna was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 by UNESCO, and in 1983 the cathedral was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in Spain.

Day 3, morning

It comes after San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Then Parque García Sanabria.
