2003
The Kunsthaus was built for the Capital of Culture year
The Kunsthaus Graz was built as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2003. It was designed by Colin Fournier and Sir Peter Cook. Its exhibitions focus on contemporary art from the 1960s onwards.
The skin
The blue acrylic skin earned the building the name Friendly Alien
The building is an example of blob architecture. Its skin is iridescent blue acrylic panels that double as photovoltaic panels. It is known as the Friendly Alien. It incorporates the façade of the Iron House, built in 1848.
The screen
The eastern side is a screen of 930 fluorescent lamps
The big pixel façade, called BIX, was created inside the acrylic skin of the eastern side. Its lamps can be adjusted individually, so the façade can show films and animations. MoMA took the concept into its collection in 2011.
930fluorescent lamps, each with adjustable brightness
No collection
The Kunsthaus has no collection and no permanent exhibition
It does not collect art, maintains no permanent exhibitions and does not have its own depot. Its exclusive purpose is to present and procure contemporary art productions.
Day 1, evening
It comes after Graz Cathedral.
