The oldest
The Pinacoteca is the oldest art museum in the city
It was founded in 1905 by the Government of the State of São Paulo and focuses on Brazilian art. The first collection was 20 works from the Museu Paulista, with 6 more acquired from artists of the city.
The school
The building was first made for an arts and crafts school
The Liceu de Artes e Ofícios was created in 1873. Land next to the Jardim Público da Luz was donated in 1896, and building began in 1897 to a design by Ramos de Azevedo and Domiciano Rossi.
Unfinished
The building was never finished and the bricks still show
The central lobby was planned with a dome, which was never completed. Exposed bricks on the façade and in the courtyards show it. Imported materials such as Riga pine and French ceramics were used inside.
Renovation
A renovation led by Paulo Mendes da Rocha won the Mies van der Rohe Prize
Between 1993 and 1998 the main building was renovated under Paulo Mendes da Rocha with Weliton Ricoy Torres and Eduardo Argenton Colonelli. The project was awarded the Mies van der Rohe Prize for Latin America.
A third building
A third building, Pina Contemporânea, opened in 2023
On March 4, 2023 the museum inaugurated Pinacoteca Contemporânea, designed by Arquitetos Associados to join the Parque da Luz. It has a public square, two galleries for large-format works and an observation deck.
