The first church
A main church was planned on this site in 1589
In 1589 it was decided that a main church would be built in the small village. It was finished around 1616. A Baroque church replaced it around 1764 and served until 1911, when it was demolished.
Slow work
The present cathedral took from 1913 to 1954 to build
Work began in 1913 on the project of the German architect Maximilian Emil Hehl, who designed a Neo-Gothic structure. It proceeded slowly. The cathedral was inaugurated in 1954 with the towers unfinished, and they were completed in 1967.
The size
The cathedral is 111 meters long and its towers reach 92 meters
It is a Latin cross church with a five-aisled nave. The dome is inspired by the Renaissance dome of the Cathedral of Florence. The inner capitals are carved with coffee branches and pineapples.

The crypt
The crypt holds the tomb of the chief who helped found the city
The crypt below the main altar is large enough to be an underground church. It has the tombs of the bishops and archbishops of São Paulo, and bronze tombs of Father Diogo Feijó and the cacique Tibiriçá.
The organ
The organ built in 1954 has 12,000 pipes
The organ was built in 1954 by the Italian firm Balbiani Vegezzi-Bossi. It is one of the largest in Latin America, with five keyboards, 329 stops and 120 registers.
