1869

A French bishop built a new cathedral around the old adobe church

Bishop Jean Baptiste Lamy began the new cathedral in 1869, bringing in French architects and Italian stone masons. The workers built it around the old adobe church, La Parroquia, which was demolished and carried out once the new building was complete. The cathedral was dedicated in 1887.

Limestone

A Romanesque Revival church in a city of adobe

In dramatic contrast to the surrounding adobe buildings, the cathedral was designed in the Romanesque Revival style and built from yellow limestone quarried near present day Lamy. The original plan called for a 160-foot steeple on each tower, but lack of funds prevented it, and the north tower is a single row of bricks taller than the south.

La Conquistadora

A wooden Madonna from 1626 that left and came back

La Conquistadora Chapel is the oldest part of the building, kept from the old Parroquia church. It houses a wooden Madonna brought from Spain in 1626. When the Spanish fled Santa Fe during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 they took the statue with them, and they brought it back when they returned in 1693.

The doors

Bronze doors with ten panels each, and stations in the Santero style

In 1986 the archdiocese commissioned new front doors by the artist Donna Quasthoff. Each door has ten bronze panels showing events in the history of the Catholic Church in Santa Fe. Inside, the stations of the cross were made in the Santero style by Marie Romero Cash, with frames carved by Roberto Montoya.

Day 1, midday

It comes after Palace of the Governors. Then Loretto Chapel.
