Arrival day

Before Day 1. San Miguel sits high in the hills and its lanes are steep and cobbled, so let the evening be easy.Details
Getting in
The town has no airport of its own. The closest ones are Leon/Guanajuato and Queretaro, and many visitors also come from Mexico City by road. Shuttles and taxis run from the airports, so check ahead on which suits your flight and your bags.
The altitude
The town lies about 1,900 meters above sea level. Drink plenty of water, go easy on the first day and take it slowly on the hills. The dry season has mild days and cool nights, so bring a light jacket for the evenings.
Where to stay
A room within a few blocks of the main garden puts the churches, the lanes and dinner within walking distance. The cobbles are uneven and hard on thin soles, so pack comfortable shoes with grip. Taxis are easy to find for the hills.
Lively dates
Day of the Dead in early November and the independence celebrations in September bring crowds and street events. Dates vary, so check ahead, and book rooms and tables early if you travel then. Day 1 is a gentle walk around the garden, so a late arrival costs you little.

Departure day

After the last day. Give the road to the airport a generous margin, and keep the last morning slow.Details
One more morning
Have a last coffee in the main garden before the day heats up. Walk a lane you have not tried, and pick up a small gift from the craft market, such as a tin ornament, a woven bag or a piece of painted ceramic.
Check-out and bags
If your flight is in the evening, ask the front desk to keep your bags and take a last stroll without them. The cobbled lanes are much easier with empty hands.
The ride to the airport
The airports are a road trip away, not a quick hop. Book your shuttle or taxi the evening before, and leave extra margin on a holiday weekend or during a festival.
