The birth

Mozart was born on the third floor on 27 January 1756

The Mozart family lived on the third floor of No. 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773, and Mozart was born in the residence on 27 January 1756. He was the seventh child of Leopold Mozart.

The flat

Seven children were born in the flat, and two survived

After marrying Anna Maria Pertl in 1747, Leopold Mozart rented the third floor apartment of a kitchen, a small cabinet, a living room, a bedroom and an office. Their seven children were born here; only two, Maria Anna and Wolfgang Amadeus, survived.

The house

The house dates from the 12th century and bears a serpent of Asclepius

The house was built in the 12th century on ground that had been part of the garden of the Benedictine monks of St Peter's. The coiled serpent in the lion's mouth on the doorway, the symbol of Asclepius, recalls the court apothecary who bought it in 1585.

The museum

Since 1880 the house has been a museum with his childhood violin

Since 1880 the building has housed a museum. The third floor exhibits Mozart's childhood violin, portraits, documents and early editions of his music. The second floor includes the clavichord on which he composed The Magic Flute.

Day 1, afternoon

It comes after Getreidegasse.
