Arrival day

Before Day 1. Markets usually open in mid to late November and close around Christmas Eve. Dates change every year, so check ahead.Details
Flying into Salzburg
Salzburg has its own airport on the western edge of town. A bus and a taxi both reach the center, and the ride is short compared with most cities. Look up the stop nearest your hotel before you leave the terminal.
Salzburg to Vienna
On the middle day of the trip you take a train from Salzburg to Vienna. Trains between the two cities run through the day, and Advent weekends are busy, so check ahead and choose a seat in advance if you can.
Dress for the cold
Days are short and cold in Advent, and a market evening means standing outside. Wear a warm hat, gloves, boots with a good grip and layers you can add, and keep your hands free for a mug.
First evening in Salzburg
Walk toward the cathedral square as the lights come on, find a warm drink and look at the stalls without a plan. Day 1 begins in the same streets, so you will already know the way.

Departure day

After the last day. Most market lights go out soon after Christmas Eve, so check ahead for closing dates.Details
The last morning
After a late evening under the lights, let the morning run slowly. Pack your mug deposit receipts, if you kept any, and return what you borrowed before you leave the area.
Getting to the plane
A train and a bus both link central Vienna with its airport. Find the departure point the night before, and leave a wide margin on a December morning, when roads and platforms can be icy and slow.
Something to take home
Gingerbread, vanilla crescents and hand-painted ornaments are the usual keepsakes. Wrap them well, and check your airline's rules for liquids if you want to take a bottle of punch.
If you have a few hours
Walk once more through the market nearest your hotel in the daylight, when the stalls are calm and the colors show. Buy one last warm drink for the road.
