The cathedral stands where a chapel was founded in 1108
The cathedral was built on the site of an old chapel or hermitage founded by Henry of Burgundy and his wife in 1108. Construction of the present building began in the second half of the 12th century, and work continued until the 16th century.
The front
Two square towers and a rose window give it the look of a fortified church
The cathedral is flanked by two square towers, each supported with two buttresses and crowned with a cupola. The façade shows a Baroque porch and a Romanesque rose window under a crenellated arch, giving the impression of a fortified church.
A wedding
King John I married Philippa of Lancaster in the cathedral in 1387
The elegant Gothic cloister was built between the 14th and the 15th centuries, during the reign of King John I. He married English Princess Philippa of Lancaster in Porto Cathedral in 1387.
Baroque
In the Baroque era Nicolau Nasoni added a loggia in 1736
In 1736 the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni added an elegant Baroque loggia to the lateral façade. In 1772 a new main portal replaced the Romanesque original, and the tower cupolas were altered.
The tiles
Baroque tiles in the cloister show scenes from the Song of Songs
The South transept arm gives access to the Gothic cloister, decorated with Baroque azulejos by Valentim de Almeida, made between 1729 and 1731. They depict some scenes from the Song of Songs.
