The clanhouse
It is the largest Hokkien clanhouse in Malaysia
The Khoo Kongsi is the clan temple of the Leong San Tong clan, whose forefathers came from Fujian. It stands in Cannon Square with an association building, a traditional theatre and rowhouses for clan members, all clustered around a granite-paved square.
A clan village
In the 19th century the complex resembled a miniature clan village
The complex had its own self-government, with educational, financial, welfare and social organisations. The Khoos were among the wealthy Straits Chinese traders of Malacca and early Penang.
The fire
A fire in 1901 was blamed on the gods, and a smaller hall was built
The first clanhouse was built in 1851 and burnt down in 1901, allegedly struck by lightning. It was believed that its resemblance to the Emperor's palace had provoked the gods. A scaled-down version was begun in 1902 and completed in 1906.
Carved timber
The hall is carved by craftsmen from China and holds ancestral tablets
The hall is embellished with intricate carvings and richly ornamented beams of fine wood by master craftsmen from China. The temple is dedicated to the clan's Patron Deities and holds ancestral tablets. Chinese operas are still staged at the theatre.
Day 2, morning
Next is Armenian Street.
