Arrival day

Before Day 1. Oktoberfest usually starts on a Saturday in mid to late September and ends on the first Sunday of October. Hotels sell out early, so book early.Details
The date and the tents
The festival starts on the first Saturday after the middle of September and runs about 16 to 18 days, ending on the first Sunday of October, or 3 October if that is later. Big tents often fill by late morning on weekends, and table reservations and entry rules differ by year, so check ahead.
Dress and what to carry
A dirndl or lederhosen is an option and not an obligation, and plenty of visitors wear jeans and a sweater. Wear comfortable shoes, since you will stand and walk a lot. Big bags are usually not allowed on the grounds, so carry little. Keep your phone and wallet close in crowds, because pickpockets work them.
Drink, and the way home
The beer is strong and it is served in large glass mugs, so pace yourself, eat, and drink water between rounds. Plan the way home before your first drink. Trains near the grounds are packed late at night, so walk to a quieter stop or book a ride, and never drive.
Guest, then Day 1
For many Bavarians this is a tradition and a party at the same time. Greet the staff and give servers room to pass, do not take the glass mugs away, and do not photograph people who ask you not to. If someone is unwell, find a staff member right away. Day 1 is the old town on foot, around Marienplatz.

Day 1. The old town and The English Garden

4 stops · 5.2 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MiddayWorth the time

    Viktualienmarkt

A daily open air market of fruit, cheese, sausages, flowers and spices, with a maypole and a shady beer garden at its heart. A good place to try small things standing up.

Go when Late morning, when the stalls are busy.

Local tip Walk the stalls once and then choose. Small portions of cheese, radish, bread and sausage make a good lunch. Ask before you take a picture of a stallholder.

    MiddayWorth the time

English Garden and the Chinese Tower

One of the biggest city parks in the world, with lawns, a stream, paths for bikes and a wooden pagoda with a beer garden beneath it. At the south end, surfers may wait their turn on a standing river wave.

Go when Midday, for a long walk and lunch under the trees.

Local tip In many traditional beer gardens you may bring your own food, but check the sign on the table. The river wave is a place to watch, not to swim, since the current is strong.

  3. Lunch

    A beer garden picnic

Beer gardens are shaded places with long tables under chestnut trees. In many traditional ones you may bring your own food and buy only a drink, so check the sign at your table.

Local tip Bring something to share, and leave the table clean when you go.

  4. 3
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Munich Residenz

The old palace of the rulers of Bavaria, with many courtyards, a treasury and a long series of richly painted rooms. A rainy day stop, and a cool one on a hot day.

Go when Afternoon, as a calm indoor stop.

Local tip Pick one part, such as the treasury or the long rooms, rather than all of it. The rooms are cool, and the courtyards are quiet.

  5. 4
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Deutsches Museum

A huge museum of science and technology on an island in the Isar, with old aircraft, ships, mines, instruments and workshops. Choose two or three halls, since there is too much to see in a day.

Go when Afternoon, as an indoor stop.

Local tip Pick two or three halls and skip the rest. Take a seat in one of the quieter galleries when your feet need it.

  6. Dinner

    Cheese noodles

Kasspatzn, soft egg noodles layered with melted cheese and topped with crisp onions, a Bavarian comfort dish. Cafes around the square serve it after a long day.

Local tip It is rich, so share a green salad. Tell the staff about any allergy first.

If it rains. Munich Residenz and Deutsches Museum are covered, so keep them. Move Viktualienmarkt and English Garden and the Chinese Tower to a dry day if you can.

Day 2. The Theresienwiese and The old town

4 stops · 10.7 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Marienplatz

The main square of Munich, with the neo-Gothic New Town Hall and its clock tower, where figures move at set times. Check ahead for the times, and stand back from the busiest corner.

Go when Morning, before the square fills with tour groups.

Local tip Look up at the clock tower and then at the figures on the Mary column. Check ahead for the times the figures move, and watch your bag in the crowd.

    MorningWorth the time

    Nymphenburg Palace

The summer palace of the rulers of Bavaria, with a long, curved front, a canal and a huge park behind it. The park is usually open to walk and the palace rooms are ticketed, so check ahead.

Go when Morning, when the park is calm.

Local tip Walk the long canal behind the palace first, and decide there whether to go inside. The park is large, so wear comfortable shoes.

  3. Lunch

    Sausages in a roll

Grilled bratwurst in a crusty roll with mustard, sold from stands and kiosks. A fast lunch before the museum or the festival.

Local tip Tell the vendor about any allergy, and eat it right away while it is hot.

About 13 min by car or transit4.4 km
  4. 3
    MiddayCheck ahead

    Theresienwiese

The big meadow west of the center where the festival is held. At noon on opening day the mayor usually taps the first keg and calls out a Bavarian phrase, and the tents begin to serve. The grounds are crowded, and entry rules, hours and reservations differ by year. Check ahead.

Go when Opening day, before noon. On a weekday, any time of day.

Local tip Tents often fill by late morning on weekends, and entry and reservations differ by year, so check ahead. Wear comfortable shoes, carry little, and drink water between beers.

    AfternoonWorth a short stop

    Bavaria statue

A giant bronze woman with a lion, standing in front of a hall of fame on the hill at the west edge of the grounds. A salute is usually fired from the steps below on opening day. A stair may lead inside the statue, so check ahead.

Go when Afternoon, on the way off the grounds.

Local tip The statue stands above the festival, and the hall behind it is a calm place to sit. If the stair inside is open, it is narrow and steep, so check ahead.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The festival can leave you tired, so keep the departure morning light.Details
The last morning
After a few long days, a slow coffee and a pretzel are enough. Many hotels hold luggage after check-out if you ask, which leaves a free hour or two in the old town.
Getting to the airport
Trains from the main station and the city center reach the airport, and taxis do too. Festival weekends fill trains and roads, so fix the plan the evening before and leave a margin.
Lost something
If you lose a bag or a phone at the festival, ask a staff member or a police point on the grounds about the lost property office before you leave Munich, and check with your hotel.
