Arrival day

Before Day 1. Naha is easy on foot and by monorail, so spend the first two days without a car and keep the first evening short.Details
Getting around
Naha airport is close to the city, and the monorail and taxis reach the center in a short ride. You need the car only for Days 3 to 5. In Japan you drive on the left, so take the first kilometres slowly and let the navigation speak.
Storms and a spare day
Typhoon season reaches into the autumn, and a storm can cancel boats and flights. Keep one spare day in your plans, and check ahead the morning of your boat day before you go to the pier.
Sacred places
Many of the island's old holy places and royal tombs are still used for prayer, and the war memorials are places of remembrance. Speak softly, follow the signs, stay on the paths and do not climb on the stones.
First evening
Walk the lanes off the main street, eat something simple and turn in early. Day 1 begins at a shrine on the cliff by the sea, so a short taxi ride or a walk will take you there.

Day 1. Naha

5 stops · 8.9 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth a short visit

    Naminoue Shrine

A small shrine on a cliff above the sea, the best known in the city. Walk up the steps, look out over the water and go slowly.

Go when Morning, when the shrine is quiet and the sea is calm.

Local tip Look down from the cliff edge to the beach below, then walk down the steps to it. Bow slightly at the gate, as locals do.

    MorningWorth the time

    Tsuboya Pottery Street

A narrow, stone-paved lane in the pottery quarter, where clay and kilns have been part of the town for centuries. Look into the workshops and the small gardens.

Go when Morning, when the kilns and workshops are open and the lane is calm.

Local tip Look for the guardian lion statues on rooftops and gates. They are the shisa that watch over Okinawan homes.

  3. Lunch

    Okinawa soba

Wheat noodles, not buckwheat, in a clear pork or fish broth, topped with soft slices of pork. The island's everyday lunch, simple and filling.

Local tip Ask for a little red ginger on the side, the traditional topping.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Shuri Castle

The hilltop castle site of the old Ryukyu kingdom. A fire in 2019 destroyed the main hall and the rebuilding changes what you can see, so check ahead. The walls, gates and views are still worth the climb.

Go when Early afternoon, then stay for the late light on the walls.

Local tip Check ahead for what is open to visitors, because the rebuilding is changing the site. The stone walls and gates are lovely even when the halls are closed.

    Makishi Public Market

A covered market hall of fresh fish, pork and tropical fruit, in the lanes behind the main street. A good place to see what the island eats.

Go when Late morning or early afternoon, outside the lunch rush.

Local tip Walk the whole hall once before you decide. Colorful fish and pork cuts you do not know are part of the fun, and the stallholders will tell you what they are.

    EveningA stroll

    Kokusai-dori

The long main street of Naha, lined with shops, cafes and small side lanes. Stroll it as the day cools.

Go when Early evening, when the heat has gone.

Local tip Turn off into the side lanes and arcades, where the small bars and shops are quieter than the main street.

  7. Dinner

    Goya champuru

A stir-fry of bitter melon, tofu, egg and pork, the dish most people link with Okinawa. The bitter taste is the point, and a first plate is a good way to learn it.

Local tip Order it with a bowl of rice and a cold tea, and share a small plate of something else.

If it rains. Makishi Public Market is covered, so keep it. Move Naminoue Shrine, Tsuboya Pottery Street, Shuri Castle and Kokusai-dori to a dry day if you can.

    Nakijin Castle Ruins

The long curving stone walls of a castle of the old kingdom, on a ridge above the sea and part of a World Heritage listing. Walk the walls and look out over the water.

Go when Morning, before the heat builds on the stone.

Local tip Walk the full length of the wall to the highest point. The view over the sea is the reward, and the climb is gentle.

    Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

One of the largest aquariums in Japan, set in a seaside park. Its huge main tank is home to whale sharks and rays. Take it slowly and leave when you are tired.

Go when Late morning, ahead of the busiest hours.

Local tip The big tank is best from the long seat in front of the glass. Sit down, and let the whale sharks come to you.

  4. Lunch

    Taco rice

Seasoned minced meat, lettuce, tomato and cheese over rice, with a spoonful of salsa. A local favorite of the island, and a very easy lunch near the aquarium.

Local tip Share a plate if you are not very hungry, because the portions can be large.

Go when Afternoon, when the water turns its brightest blue.

Local tip Park at a viewpoint and walk the first stretch if you can. It is the only way to see the water from the right height.

Go when Around sunset (about 6:02 PM), when the west-facing cliff glows.

Local tip The walk is short and flat. Stay on the path, because the cliff edge is steep, and keep an eye on small children.

Go when Morning, as soon as you arrive in the south.

Local tip The cave floor is wet in places, so wear shoes with grip. It is cool inside, which is a relief on a warm day.

A small island with a quiet fishing village, hills and clear water. Walk the harbor road, look at the boats and take your time.

Go when Midday, then have lunch by the harbor.

  4. Lunch

    Island fish lunch

A plate of the day's catch from the sea around the island, usually grilled or raw with rice and miso soup. A simple lunch with a view of the harbor.

Local tip Ask what came in that morning, and order the fish on the board.

If it rains. Gyokusendo Cave is covered, so keep it. Move Zamami Island to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. You end in Naha, close to the airport, so the last morning can stay slow.Details
Check-out
Ask your hotel in Naha if it will keep your bags after you leave the room. Then you can take a last slow walk and a bowl of noodles with nothing to carry.
Returning the car
You do not need the car on Day 6, the boat day. Hand it back after Day 5 if the rental company allows it, and check its fuel rules in the contract.
To the airport
The monorail runs from the center to the airport, and taxis are quick too. Allow extra time for check-in, and leave earlier if the weather looks unsettled.
If a storm delays you
If a storm cancels a flight, stay put in Naha and watch the airline's notices. A spare day at the end is a good way to keep the whole trip calm.
