Arrival day

Before Day 1. Halifax is the gentle start, so keep the first evening easy and save the driving for the days after.Details
From the airport
Halifax Stanfield International Airport sits well outside the city, so plan on a taxi, a shuttle or a rental car to get downtown. Say so at the desk if you want the car for the whole trip, and ask where to return it.
Driving here
Traffic keeps to the right, as in the rest of Canada and the United States. Signs are in kilometres and speeds are in kilometres an hour. Out on the coast the roads are slow and winding, so leave room in every day.
When to take the car
You do not need the car on Day 1, because the Halifax waterfront, the hill and the gardens are all close together. Collect it on the morning of Day 2, and leave it parked downtown until then.
First evening
Walk down to the harbor and watch the light fade on the water. Day 1 begins right on that boardwalk, so you will already be in the right place. Pack a rain jacket, because fog and showers are common.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk

A long wooden boardwalk along the harbor, with old warehouses, ferries, ships and benches. Walk it at an easy pace and stop wherever the view invites you to.

Go when Morning, before the day crowds, then again at dusk when the lights come on.

Local tip Walk it end to end, then take the short ferry across the harbor and back if the weather is fine. It is a cheap and easy way to see the city from the water.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Skyline Trail

A well-known walk in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park that ends in a boardwalk above a cliff, with a wide view over the ocean. Moose are common here and can be dangerous, so keep a good distance. Check ahead on trail conditions and park fees.

Go when Midday or early afternoon, before the afternoon light fades and when fog is not on the ridge.

Local tip Moose are common here and dangerous, so keep a good distance and never approach. Check ahead on trail conditions and park fees. Wear a warm layer, because the wind at the end is strong.

  3. Lunch

    Acadian rappie pie

An old Acadian dish of grated potato baked with chicken or pork until it is soft and savory. A specialty of the Chéticamp area.

Local tip Try a small plate and add butter, or a little molasses, as the locals do.

    Citadel Hill

A star-shaped fort on the hill above downtown, with grassy ramparts and a wide view of the harbor. It is a lasting national historic site, so check ahead for how visits are arranged.

Go when Afternoon, when the light is soft over the harbor.

Local tip Even if you do not go into the fort, walk up the grassy slope for the view over the harbor and downtown. Check ahead for how visits are arranged.

  5. Dinner

Fish and chips by the harbor

Fresh haddock in a light crisp batter, with chips and a wedge of lemon. A simple dinner near the water on your first night.

Local tip Ask what the fish of the day is, and order that.

    MorningStay on the dry rock

    Peggy's Cove Lighthouse

A white lighthouse with a red lantern on a headland of smooth granite. Safety first: the wet black rock at the edge of the water is dangerous, and many people have been swept off it by waves. Stay on the dry, pale rock, well back from the surf.

Go when Early morning, before the tour buses, in calm weather.

Local tip Stay on the pale, dry rock and well back from the water. The wet black granite near the surf is slippery, and waves can arrive without warning. People have been swept off and lost here. Keep children close.

    Old Town Lunenburg

A UNESCO World Heritage old town of brightly painted wooden houses and shops, laid out in a grid on a hill above the harbor. Walk the streets down to the water and back up.

Go when Morning, when the town is quiet and the light is on the harbor.

Local tip Walk down to the water and back up, and look at the details: bright paint, trimmed windows and the small bump on the front of some houses, a style found here.

  4. Lunch

    A bowl of seafood chowder

Thick and creamy, with fish, scallops and shrimp, served with a roll. Warming on a foggy day by the sea.

Local tip Order it as a main course, not a starter, and sit by a window.

Departure day

After the last day. The loop ends in the far northeast, so plan the way back to Halifax and the flight before you set out.Details
The drive back
Grand-Pré National Historic Site to Halifax Stanfield Airport: about 1 h 10 min by car, 68.3 km. Work back from your flight time, and allow extra for weather and stops.
The long way back
Cape Breton is a long drive from Halifax on slow roads, so do not cut it close. Many travelers take a night near Halifax before an early flight, or fly out of Sydney on Cape Breton. Check the options when you book.
Returning the car
Ask the rental desk about a drop-off in another town before you leave, because a one-way return can cost extra. Fill the tank before the last stretch, as petrol stations thin out on the quiet roads.
Seasonal closures
Many small museums, tours and cafes close after Canadian Thanksgiving in October. If you travel late in the year, check ahead for each stop and keep a spare plan for a wet day.
If you have a few hours
Stop for one last seafood meal on the way, then leave plenty of time for the road. Fog or rain can slow the last stretch.
