The museum

Founded in 1870 by a group of Americans

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of Americans, including philanthropists, artists and businessmen, who wanted a national institution that would inspire and educate the public.

An object

A temple built in Nubia around 23 BCE

The Temple of Dendur stood in Nubia, about 50 miles south of modern Aswan. Emperor Augustus commissioned it, around 23 BCE, for the goddess Isis and the deified brothers Pedesi and Pihor.

A rescue

Moved to save it from a lake

Egypt began building the Aswan High Dam in 1960, and plans called for Lake Nasser to submerge the temple permanently. Fifty countries joined a UNESCO campaign to save the monuments of Nubia, and in 1963 the temple was dismantled and moved.

A contest

A gift, and a contest to house it

In 1965 Egypt presented the temple to the United States. The press nicknamed the competition for it the "Dendur Derby", and on April 20, 1967 it was awarded to the Met, which had a clear plan to protect it from the weather.

Day 2, afternoon

It comes after Central Park.
