The building
Opened in 1913 on the site of two earlier stations
The terminal opened in 1913 on the site of two similarly named predecessor stations, the first of which dated to 1871. It covers 48 acres.
44platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world
The name
The full name is carved into the front
It has been named Grand Central Terminal since before its completion in 1913, and the full title is inscribed on its 42nd Street facade. People have long called it Grand Central Station, the name of the station before it.
“To all those with head, heart, and hand • Toiled in the construction of this monument to the public service • This is inscribed.”
Inscribed above the doors in the main entrance foyer
Listen
A whispering gallery under a bridge
On the landing beneath a bridge between Vanderbilt Hall and the Main Concourse, the arches create a whispering gallery. A person standing in one corner can hear another speaking softly in the diagonally opposite corner.
Saved
Saved from demolition in the 1970s
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, former First Lady of the United States, helped ward off the demolition of the Main Concourse and the construction of Grand Central Tower in the 1970s. The foyer at the main entrance was named for her in 2014.
