Feldsberg
The Liechtenstein family held the castle from 1249 for 700 years
The castle, then part of the Duchy of Austria and called Feldsberg, was probably founded in the 11th century. The House of Liechtenstein acquired it in 1249, and it remained their principal residence for 700 years, until 1939.
Rebuilt
The Hussite Wars damaged it badly and a Baroque rebuild followed
The castle was expanded in late Romanesque style in the first half of the 13th century. It was badly damaged in the Hussite Wars and later rebuilt by Prince Charles I of Liechtenstein in the Baroque style.
The palace
Fischer von Erlach designed the palace in the early 18th century
The Valtice Palace was designed as the seat of the ruling princes of Liechtenstein by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in the early 18th century. Earlier, Prince Karl Eusebius had rebuilt the castle and built a new parish church, finished in 1671.
The avenue
A poem about wine in Valtice gave the avenue to Lednice its name
In 1715 the two castles were connected by a 7 km landscape avenue. It was later renamed for the poet Petr Bezruč, whose poem Valčice describes a journey to Lednice after tasting wine in Valtice.
Wine today
The castle now houses the National Wine Centre
Both the National Wine Centre and the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic reside in the castle. The Neoclassical Temple of Diana, from 1812 and designed by Joseph Hardtmuth, stands in the surrounding English park.
Day 4, evening
