Arrival day

Before Day 1. You fly into Cancún and take the road to the ferry for Holbox on Day 1.Details
Getting here
Fly into Cancún. Holbox is reached by a long road to the ferry town of Chiquilá and a short boat across the lagoon. Book the road transfer ahead, and set off in the morning so you reach the last boats in daylight.
Getting around
Holbox allows no vehicles on its sand streets, so you walk, cycle or ride a golf cart. Isla Mujeres is not car free: taxis, golf carts and scooters all share its roads. Pack light, since your bag rides in a cart.
Climate and care
It is hot and humid, with a rainy and hurricane season in the second half of the year, and boats can stop running in storms. Use reef safe sun cream, never touch corals or turtles, and follow the rules of the protected areas.
First evening
Day 1 is a travel day, with the road to Chiquilá, the boat and an easy walk on the sand streets of Holbox before supper. Carry some cash, since not every place on the islands takes cards.

How much walking? On foot, about 1.4 kilometers a day, and 124.5 kilometers by car in all across 4 days. Distances are straight-line estimates, so allow extra for the streets.

Day 1. The road, the boat and the sand streets

2 stops · 11.2 km by car

A travel day to the first island. The road to the ferry town of Chiquilá, a short boat across the lagoon and an easy walk on the sand streets of Holbox, with almost no cars in sight.

If you only have half a dayChiquilá, then Holbox. A mainland ferry town at the end of the road, then an island town of sand streets and painted houses with almost no cars.
  1. Breakfast

An early breakfast before the road

Eggs, beans and tortillas with coffee, eaten before the long road to the ferry.

Local tip Carry a snack and water for the road.

  2. 1
    Morning

    Chiquilá

The mainland ferry town at the end of the road, where boats cross the lagoon to Holbox. There is little to do but wait for the boat, so arrive with time in hand and buy water before you cross.

Go when Morning, with time to spare before the boat.

Local tip Buy water and sun cream before you cross, and keep your bag with you on the dock. Check ahead on the last boat of the day.

  3. Lunch

Fish and rice by the ferry

Grilled fish or a shrimp cocktail with rice, tortillas and a squeeze of lime, from a simple place near the dock.

Local tip Order the catch of the day, and check that it is served hot.

About 26 min by car or transit11.2 km
  4. 2
    Afternoon

    Holbox

The island town, a grid of sand streets lined with painted houses, murals and small shops, with a long beach on its north shore. Vehicles are not allowed, so you walk, cycle or ride a golf cart. Let the pace slow down.

Go when Afternoon, once the sun softens.

Local tip Walk the sand streets slowly and look at the murals. Take a layer for the evening, since the sea breeze is cool after dark.

  5. Dinner

    Seafood on a sand street

The seafood of the island, grilled or in a stew, the lobster, fish or shrimp that boats bring in, served at a table on a sand street.

Local tip Ask what came in today, and be patient, since it is cooked fresh.

If it rains. Rain and wind can slow the boat. Leave early, wait in a covered spot at the dock, and keep the sand streets for the dry gap.

Day 2. A lagoon of birds and the western tip

2 stops · 18.2 km by car

A full day on and around Holbox. A boat trip across the protected lagoon with a local guide, then a long slow afternoon on the beach and a walk to the western tip of the island.

If you only have half a dayYum Balam, then Punta Cocos. A protected area of lagoon and mangrove reached by boat, then the western tip of the island where the lagoon meets the sea.
  1. Travel from HolboxAbout 22 min by car or transit8.9 km
    Where Day 1 ended.
  2. Breakfast

    Fruit, eggs and coffee

A plate of tropical fruit, eggs and a roll before the boat.

Local tip Pack a hat, water and reef safe sun cream.

  3. 1
    Morning

    Yum Balam

A protected area of coastal wetlands, mangroves and lagoon beside the island, with Holbox and Chiquilá inside it. A boat trip with a licensed local guide may show wading birds, and flamingos are reported from April to December. It is also home to jaguars, manatees and sea turtles, which are shy and hard to see.

Go when Morning, when the lagoon is calm.

Local tip Go with a licensed local guide and keep your distance from the birds. Bring a hat, water and reef safe sun cream.

  4. Lunch

    Ceviche and a cold drink

Raw fish cured in lime juice with onion, chilli and coriander, with crisp tortilla chips and a cold drink.

Local tip Eat it fresh and soon after it is made, and ask for the chilli on the side.

About 22 min by car or transit9.4 km
  5. 2
    Evening

    Punta Cocos

The western tip of the island, where the lagoon meets the sea, with wide, shallow water. On dark nights the water may glow with tiny plankton that light up when disturbed, but it cannot be promised, and moonlight hides it. Take a light and a layer.

Go when Evening, as the light goes (about 7:06 PM).

Local tip Walk out at low tide and carry a torch. The glowing water is a matter of luck and a dark night, so treat it as a bonus.

  6. Dinner

    Grilled fish and tortillas

A grilled whole fish or a fillet with rice, salad and warm tortillas, eaten as the light fades.

Local tip Share one fish between two and leave room for something sweet.

If it rains. The lagoon boat may not run in a storm, so check with your guide. A sand street walk and a long lunch under a roof make a good wet day.

Day 3. Across the mainland to Isla Mujeres

2 stops · 81.1 km by car

A long travel day to the second island. An early boat back to Chiquilá, the road to the Cancún waterfront and a ferry to Isla Mujeres, with time to settle in and walk the town in the evening.

If you only have half a dayPuerto Juárez, then Isla Mujeres. A ferry port on the Cancún waterfront, then an island town across the water where taxis, golf carts and scooters share the streets.

  2. Breakfast

A quick breakfast before the boat

Coffee and a sweet roll or a plate of fruit, taken early before the boat to the mainland.

Local tip Take water for the road.

    Afternoon

    Puerto Juárez

A district on the Cancún waterfront with the ferry docks for Isla Mujeres. Check ahead on which boats run and on the last departure, and carry your bags aboard yourself.

Go when Afternoon, with a margin before the last ferry.

Local tip Check the last departure to the island before you set off, and keep your ticket handy.

  4. Lunch

    A roadside lunch

Tacos, a quesadilla or a bowl of lime soup, a Yucatán dish with shredded chicken and crisp tortilla strips.

Local tip Eat light before the ferry if you get seasick.

About 24 min by car or transit10.3 km
  5. 2
    Evening

    Isla Mujeres

The island town at the northern end of a long, narrow island, with a waterfront walk and a plaza. Unlike Holbox it has taxis, golf carts and scooters, so cross the road with care. Take a stroll once the day trippers have left.

Go when Evening, after the day trippers leave.

Local tip Walk the waterfront and the plaza, and look both ways, since golf carts and scooters share the road.

  6. Dinner

    Fish rubbed with red paste

A whole fish rubbed with a red paste of achiote and grilled over a flame, a Yucatán way of cooking it, served with rice and tortillas.

Local tip Ask for the sauce on the side, and eat by hand with the tortillas.

If it rains. Check the ferry before you set off, since boats can stop in strong wind. A slow day on the road suits wet weather, and the town waits for the evening.

Day 4. The south point, a sunken gallery and the town beach

3 stops · 1.4 km on foot, 13.9 km by car

A day around Isla Mujeres by golf cart. The southern tip with its lookout and a small Maya temple, a gallery of sculptures on the sea floor, and the shallow beach at the northern end of town, then the boat to the mainland.

If you only have half a dayPunta Sur, then Cancún Underwater Museum. The southern tip with a lookout and a small Maya temple, then hundreds of concrete sculptures on the sea floor.
  1. Travel from Isla MujeresAbout 18 min by car or transit6.9 km
    Where Day 3 ended.
  2. Breakfast

    Fruit and coffee

A plate of fruit, a roll and coffee, a light start before the boat.

Local tip Skip a heavy meal if you plan to snorkel.

  3. 1
    Morning

    Punta Sur

The southern tip of the island, with a lookout over the sea, clifftop paths with sculptures and the remains of a small Maya temple to Ixchel, a goddess of childbirth and medicine. Go by golf cart or taxi, and take water and a hat.

Go when Morning, before the heat.

Local tip Take water and a hat, and walk the clifftop paths slowly. Look at the sculptures and the small temple at the very tip.

    Midday

    Cancún Underwater Museum

A gallery of hundreds of concrete sculptures on the sea floor off the island, placed to give coral a place to grow and to draw visitors away from the natural reef. Visit by snorkel or dive boat with a licensed operator. Visibility depends on the day.

Go when Midday, when the sun is high and the water clearer.

Local tip Go by snorkel or dive boat with a licensed operator, and never touch the sculptures or the coral. Ask how the water looks that day.

  5. Lunch

A salty snack after the water

Chips with guacamole, ceviche and a cold fruit drink, after the swim.

Local tip Rinse off the salt and sun cream before you sit down.

About 18 min by car or transit7.0 km
  6. 3
    Afternoon

    Playa Norte

The town beach at the northern tip of the island, with soft sand and usually calm, shallow water. A good place for a last swim before the boat.

Go when Afternoon, for a last swim.

Local tip The water is shallow, so it suits a last, easy swim. Keep an eye on the clock for the boat.

  7. Dinner

A farewell supper by the water

A last plate of grilled fish or shrimp, with a cold drink, at a table near the water.

Local tip Book the boat to the mainland for the morning before you settle in.

If it rains. The sculpture trip depends on the sea, so check with the operator. If the sea is rough, take a long lunch in town and drive the south road when it clears.

Departure day

After the last day. The ferry to the mainland and the road to the airport need an early start.Details
Getting out
Take an early boat from Isla Mujeres to the mainland and book the ride to the Cancún airport ahead. Leave extra time for the road, and more if the weather is poor.
Your flight
Pack wet swim things in a bag of their own, since sand and salt get everywhere. Spend your last pesos before you fly, because they are hard to change abroad.
If you have a few hours
Take one last swim at the town beach on Isla Mujeres, or sit in the shade of the plaza with something cold to drink.
