Arrival day

Before Day 1. Hokkaido is big, and the days ahead are long, so keep the first evening light.Details
From the airport
Most visitors land at the main airport south of Sapporo, which has a train into the city. Allow plenty of time after a long flight, and keep your passport and a little cash within reach for the first day.
Driving on the left
Japan drives on the left, and the roads are quiet but the signs are in Japanese with English beside the main ones. Check what licence paperwork a visitor needs before you travel, and ask the rental desk to set the car navigation to English.
Your car
Collect the rental car on the morning of Day 3, when you leave the city, not before. Sapporo is easy by subway and parking is a chore. If you can, choose a pick-up and drop-off you can sort out ahead, because the route does not return to the start.
Before the first morning
Buy a few snacks and water for the road, because some stretches have long gaps between towns. Day 1 is a gentle one in the city, to give you time to settle.

Day 1. Lake Akan and Lake Mashū and Asahikawa and Daisetsuzan

3 stops · 164.1 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Lake Mashū

A deep crater lake with steep walls and no river flowing in or out. Fog often hides the water, so give the lookouts a little time to clear.

Go when Midday, when the fog has had a chance to lift.

Local tip Fog is common, and it can clear in minutes, so give the lookout a little time. Do not climb past the barriers.

AfternoonA ropeway and a short walk

    Kurodake Ropeway

A ropeway and a chairlift lift you up the side of a mountain in Daisetsuzan. At the top, short paths run across alpine meadows. Trail conditions and the weather decide how far to go, so check ahead.

Go when Afternoon, if the sky is clear.

Local tip It is cold at the top even in summer, so bring layers. Brown bears live in these mountains, so follow the advice at the trailhead and do not walk alone off the path. Check ahead for trail and weather.

  3. Lunch

    Asahikawa soy sauce ramen

Asahikawa has its own style of ramen, with a dark soy sauce soup, curly noodles and a thin layer of oil on top to hold the heat.

Local tip Ask for a small bowl, because the soup is rich.

    EveningWorth a short stop

    Blue Pond

A small pond of strangely blue water, with dead trees standing in it, on the edge of the forest. The color changes with the light and the weather, so a gray day will look different.

Go when Early evening, in calm weather.

Local tip The blue is strongest in still, clear weather and fades under cloud, so treat it as a bonus. Stay on the path.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Day 2. Hakodate and Noboribetsu

    Otaru Canal

A short canal lined with old stone warehouses and gas lamps, left from the days when Otaru was a busy port. Walk along it slowly and look at the doors of the warehouses.

Go when Morning, before the crowds come off the trains.

Local tip Walk the full length of the canal on the stone path, then come back in the evening when the old lamps are lit.

    Noboribetsu Hell Valley

A steaming volcanic valley of bare rock, yellow sulphur and hot streams. A wooden walkway runs through it. The smell is strong, so stay on the paths and move on.

Go when Morning, when the steam is thickest.

Local tip Stay on the wooden walkway and keep children close. The ground is hot in places, and the smell of sulphur is strong near the vents.

    Mount Hakodate

A small mountain above the town with a night view over a narrow strip of land between two bays. Go up before dark and stay while the lights come on.

Go when About an hour before sunset (about 7:12 PM), then stay as the lights come on.

Local tip Go up before dark so you can watch the light change, and bring a warm layer, because it is much cooler at the top. Check ahead for the way up and the weather.

  5. Dinner

    Hakodate salt ramen

Hakodate is known for a clear, light salt ramen, with a golden broth and thin noodles. A simple meal after the night view.

Local tip Order a small bowl if you plan to eat again later.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The last lake is far from Sapporo, so plan the way home the night before.Details
The last morning
Do not plan a long drive and a flight on the same day without slack. The roads in the east are open and quiet, but one wrong turn costs time, and fog on the lakes can slow a morning.
Back to the city, or a flight
Sapporo is a long drive back from the eastern lakes. Many travelers take a flight from an airport in the east instead, or break the drive with a night on the way. Check which suits your dates and book ahead.
The rental car
If you drop the car at a different place from where you collected it, ask when you book whether that is allowed. Refill the tank before you hand it back, and keep the receipt.
If a day was lost to weather
If fog or rain took one of the big days, use any spare hours for a nearer hot spring bath or an easy lakeside walk. Do not add a mountain on the last day.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to visit Hokkaido?

By average weather from 2021 to 2025, May to July and September are the most comfortable months for walking around Hokkaido. This plan is built for late July, which is one of the best months. Crowds and prices change through the year, so check them before you book.

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 2 days in Hokkaido, planned for late July. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?
