Arrival day

Before Day 1. The peninsula is long and the roads are slow, so choose a base before you arrive.Details
Getting here
Most visitors drive from Milwaukee, close to three hours, or fly to Green Bay and drive about an hour to Sturgeon Bay. Check flights and the weather on the way, because the roads up the peninsula are two lanes and slow on a summer Friday.
Your car
A car is the trip. The villages are a few minutes apart and the sights are spread along one long road, so the days are short drives. Fill the tank in Sturgeon Bay, because stations thin out in the north.
Where to sleep
Sleep in Fish Creek, Ephraim or Sister Bay for the middle of the peninsula, which puts every day within an easy drive. Rooms fill early for the summer weekends and for the weeks of fall color, and many places close for the winter, so book ahead and check that your choice is open.
Ferries and weather
Day 3 crosses to Washington Island on a car ferry that runs to a timetable. Check the times and the rules for cars the evening before, and expect delays in strong wind. Pack a layer for the lake, which makes even a hot day cool in the evening, and plan to arrive in Sturgeon Bay for Day 1 by mid morning.

Day 1. The north tip and the bay villages

5 stops · 41.0 mi

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Newport State Park

A wilderness state park at the tip of the peninsula, with long quiet beaches, forest trails and open lake. A place for a slow walk where you may see no one.

Go when Morning, when the beach is empty.

Local tip It is a wild park with few services, so bring water and a layer, and check ahead on the entry rules. Stay after dark only if the park allows it, and bring a light.

    MiddayWorth a short visit

    Eagle Bluff Light

A small white lighthouse on a bluff inside the state park, with views over the bay and the islands. The tower and the keeper's house have their own seasons, so check ahead.

Go when Midday, with the light on the bay.

Local tip A short walk from the car. The lighthouse and the house have limited days, so check ahead if you want to go inside.

  3. Lunch

    A cheese and sausage lunch

Wisconsin cheese, a sausage and a good loaf, eaten at a picnic table with a view of the bay.

Local tip Ask for a taste of the local cheese curds, which squeak when fresh.

  4. 3
    MiddayWorth a short stop

    Gills Rock

A small fishing harbor at the top of the peninsula and the road to the ferry. A good place for a short stroll by the boats and a lunch to pack.

Go when Midday, on the way to the ferry.

Local tip Park and walk down to the harbor to look at the fishing boats. Fill the tank and buy lunch here, since the island has fewer places to do both.

Local tip It is a big park, so choose one thing, a shore walk, a lookout or a cycle path, and do it well. Check ahead on any entry rules for the state park.

A Door County tradition: whitefish and potatoes boiled in a big pot over a wood fire, with a dramatic boil-over at the end. Eaten with bread, coleslaw and cherry pie.

Local tip Book ahead in summer, and arrive on time, since the boil is a show as well as a dinner.

Go when Morning, as a calm start, or any rainy hour.

Local tip Allow an hour or two. Check ahead on opening, and on whether the second site in Gills Rock fits a later day.

    Whitefish Dunes State Park

The largest sand dunes on the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan, behind a wide, pale beach, with walking trails through the dunes and woods. The dunes are fragile, so keep to the paths.

Go when Midday, with the sun on the sand.

Local tip Walk to the beach first and then up through the dunes on the boardwalk and paths. Keep off the dunes themselves, which are fragile, and check ahead on the entry rules for a state park.

    AfternoonWorth the time, with care

    Cave Point County Park

Limestone cliffs and small sea caves that the lake has cut into the shore, where the waves boom and spray on a windy day. Keep well back from the edge and never climb on wet rock, since the lake is cold and the stone is slick.

Go when Afternoon, and better on a windy day when the waves come in.

Local tip Look from the edge of the path, never from the rock. The cliffs are slick and the lake is cold, and a wave can come higher than you expect.

About 32 min by car or transit10.2 mi

    AfternoonWorth a short visit

    Egg Harbor

A small village on the bay in the middle of the orchard country, with a beach, a harbor and roadside stands in season.

Go when Afternoon, for a slow stroll.

Local tip A small village on the bay, near the orchards, with a beach and a harbor. Look for the roadside stands in cherry season.

  7. Dinner

    A harbor dinner

Whitefish, a burger or a plate of pasta at a table on the harbor in Ephraim or Fish Creek, with the sunset in the window.

Local tip Book ahead at weekends and eat on the early side if you want the light.

If it rains. Door County Maritime Museum is covered, so keep it. Move Potawatomi State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave Point County Park and Egg Harbor to a dry day if you can.

    Washington Island

An island across the strait known as Death's Door, with farms, woods and quiet beaches. Take the car across and spend the afternoon driving or cycling its small roads.

Go when Afternoon, with a morning crossing if you can.

Local tip Check the ferry timetable and what cars need on the day, and do not cut the last crossing home too fine. The island has quiet roads that suit a bicycle as well as a car.

Departure day

After the last day. The drive south is slow on a Sunday evening in season, so leave more time than the map says.Details
The drive out
The road back to Green Bay or Milwaukee follows one two-lane highway for much of the way. On a summer or fall Sunday afternoon it can be slow, so leave before the rush or go in the morning.
Your flight
If you fly from Green Bay, leave Sturgeon Bay at least two hours early. If you fly from Milwaukee or Chicago, add extra time for the lake road and the city traffic.
Returning the car
Fill the tank in Sturgeon Bay before the airport. If you rented in one city and fly from another, ask the rental company about the rules for dropping the car somewhere else.
If you have a few hours
Walk the Sturgeon Bay waterfront once more or buy a last pie from an orchard stand, then go.
