The rocks
Two monoliths, Ship Rock and Creation Rock, form the amphitheater
The venue is best known for two massive monoliths, Ship Rock and Creation Rock, with the smaller Stage Rock. Together they flank the 9,525 seat area and naturally form the amphitheater. Oxidized minerals give the rock its reddish colors.

The owners
It was the Garden of the Angels, then the Garden of the Titans
Marion Burts became the first recorded owner in 1872, and Leonard H. Eicholtz made it a park in 1878. John Brisben Walker bought it in 1906, renamed it the Garden of the Titans and built a funicular railway up Mount Morrison.
Built
Workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps built it from 1936
In 1927 Denver bought Red Rocks. With architect Burnham F. Hoyt and Stanley E. Morse, and labor from the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration, construction began in 1936. It was dedicated on June 15, 1941, with a performance by Helen Jepson.
The sound
Mary Garden sang there in 1911 and praised its acoustic properties
Renowned opera singer Mary Garden put Red Rocks on the world musical map with her performance on May 10, 1911. She said she had never found more perfect acoustic properties in any opera house.
“Never in any opera house, the world over, have I found more perfect acoustic properties.”
